SPRINGDALE - Little Rock Parkview junior guard Trey Finn is definitely a Division I basketball prospect and really didn't have to show up at this weekend's 11th annual AAO Top 25 to prove that.
But the 6-1, 205-pound Finn loves competition and that's why he was dishing, driving and knocking down shots Friday night at the All-Star Sports Arena at a two-day event that features over 140 of the top boys and girls underclassman prospects in the state.
"I just wanted to come up here because I knew it would be a wonderful time and I just love competing with people," Finn said. "The more you compete, the better you get and that is what I am all about."
Finn, who the University of Arkansas is recruiting, is coming off a junior season in which he helped lead the Patriots to a 28-3 mark, a 6A-South Conference runner-up finish and into the state tournament semifinals before falling to Forrest City 70-65 in double overtime.
"We had an excellent season, a wonderful season even though it didn't turn out like we wanted it to," Finn said. "We were hoping to be back-to-back state champs. But we are going work hard and get it done next year."
He averaged 20 points. 10 rebound and 6 assists for Parkview and already has offers from Ole Miss, UALR, Indiana State and Middle Tennessee State with the Razorbacks, Wichita State and Cornell among others showing interest.
"I feel like I had an excellent season, even though my coach told me I needed to shoot more," Finn said. "I probably only got 10 shots off a game this season, but next season he wants me and another one of guards to take close to 30 (combined) a game."
"The strength of my game right now is shooting the ball," Finn added. "I need to work on my ball-handling and I am working on my conditioning to get a little bit more weight off. When I go to college, I am going to be playing the 1 and 2 so I need to be a little lighter."
It's clear that he wouldn't mind at all coming to Arkansas after visiting the school for its Junior Day on Feb. 24, a visit that included a Razorback basketball game with Tennessee.
"I love it up there," Finn said. "I had been to a lot of football games, but that was my first basketball game. Arkansas has talked to me and is very interested. I also went to Ole Miss on Wednesday on an unofficial visit. I liked it at Ole Miss, but I love the atmosphere up there at Arkansas. It's wonderful. I would love to play at Arkansas."
Finn was an all-tournament selection as a sophomore as Parkview won the Class AAAAA title and also was invited and shined as last season's AAO Top 25 event.
"We have three main seniors that are going to be gone so we will have to replace them," Finn said. "We are not going to have a great post game next season – just one decent center – so our guards will have to carry the team next season."
Before that, he'll get in plenty of action with his Arkansas Kings AAU squad beginning with the Real Deal on the Hill Tournament in Fayetteville on April 6-8.
The Kings, which also feature Pulaski Academy football-basketball star and AAO Top 25 invitee Cruz Williams, won their first six games last season at the Real Deal 16-and-division last year before falling to the Indiana Elite Hoops in the final.
"I love my team," Finn said of the Kings. "I just love those guys and we help each other out a lot and play unselfishly. Finn said. "We'll be in Fayetteville in three weeks for the Real Deal on the Hill and a lot of college coaches have said they are going to be there checking me out."
Action will pick back up at noon on Saturday with the AAO Top 25 All-Star games being played around 4 p.m.
