Big 12 Spring Honor Roll List Announced

An impressive list of 255 Nebraska student-athletes across all sports claimed spots on the Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll released on Monday, June 11. Among the 255 student-athletes who achieved 3.0 or better grade-point averages during the semester, 46 Huskers posted perfect 4.0 GPAs.

Overall for the academic year, Nebraska student-athletes earned 525 spots on the Big 12 fall and spring honor rolls, including 79 perfect 4.0 semesters.

Nebraska's approach to recruiting the nation's finest student-athletes yielded a remarkably diverse contingent of spring academic honorees that included representatives of 23 U.S. states and 17 foreign countries, including honor roll members from four Canadian provinces. The Huskers' Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll class also carried a distinct state flavor with 104 native Nebraskans among the 255 award winners.

Coach Bill Callahan's Nebraska football team continued to shine in the classroom with 35 Huskers earning positions on the spring honor roll. Six football players posted perfect 4.0 GPA semesters, inlcuding Wes Cammack, Andy Kadavy, Kevin Luhrs, Justin Makovicka, Patrick Witt and Tyler Wortman.

Along with a strong contingent from the football team, Coach Gary Pepin's Nebraska men's and women's track and field and cross country programs contributed 66 members to the honor roll. On the men's side, DJ Kohlhaase, Eric Lund, Lee Martin, Issar Yazhbin and Bryce Somer produced 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring, while Ashlee Dickinson, Jenny Green, Sarah Lyons, Janae Mueller, Justin Roach, Kim Shubert, Joslyn Dalton, Betsy Miller and Kim Pancoast added perfect semesters on the women's side. Among the track and field honorees, Coach Jay Dirksen's men's and women's cross country squads produced 20 academic honorees, including four athletes with 4.0 semesters.

Coach Mike Anderson's Nebraska baseball team also had a solid semester in the classroom, with 17 Huskers earning spots on the Big 12 Spring Academic Honor Roll. Jon Klausing and Mark Hightower both posted 4.0 semesters, while starters DJ Belfonte, Andy Gerch, Bryce Nimmo, Jeff Tezak and Luke Wertz all added honors while helping Nebraska to its eighth NCAA Regional appearance in the past nine seasons.

Coach John Walker's Nebraska soccer team also enjoyed amazing success in the classroom with 21 Huskers posting better than 3.0 GPAs, including a 4.0 semester from Brigid Kenny. Not to be outdone, Coach Pablo Morales' NU swimming and diving squad added 21 spring academic honorees as well, including 4.0 semesters from Amie Buoy, Kelsey Ida, Bailey Ingles and Sarah Ziegelmann.

The Nebraska volleyball team added 10 players to the honor roll, including four of Coach John Cook's 2006 NCAA champion Huskers producing 4.0 grade-point averages. Sarah Pavan, the 2006 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year for volleyball and the 2006 AVCA Player of the Year, posted a perfect 4.0 GPA, while 2005 CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-American and 2005 AVCA Player of the Year Christina Houghtelling added a perfect semester of her own. Amanda Gates and Kori Cooper also posted 4.0 semesters during the spring.

Coach Robin Krapfl's Husker women's golf team added another outstanding performance in the classroom, while earning a second straight trip to NCAA Regional play. Ten NU female golfers earned honor roll spots, led by Allison Stewart and Megan Place, who posted perfect 4.0 GPA semesters.

The Nebraska wrestling team led by Coach Mark Manning contributed 10 student-athletes to the Husker spring academic honor roll, including a 4.0 GPA semester from Rob Plambeck. Coach Kerry McDermott's men's tennis team pitched in nine honorees, led by perfect semesters from Renato Melo, Jerry Posch and Brett Tesmer.

Coach Connie Yori's Nebraska women's basketball team produced eight honor roll members, as did Coach Rhonda Revelle's Husker softball team, led by 4.0 semesters from Molly Hill and KoKo Tacha. Coach Scott Jacobson's NU women's tennis team also served up eight honorees, led by perfect semesters from NCAA singles qualifier Imke Reimers and Diana Kuhl.

The Nebraska men's and women's gymnastics teams each produced six spring academic honor roll members, led by perfect semesters from Stefan Wallof and Michele Zabawa. The NU rifle team added six honorees of its own, including 4.0 semesters from Stacy Underwood and Katie Harrington.

The men's basketball team and men's golf team each produced five academic honorees, while the women's bowling team pitched in four members to the Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll.
