Huskers offer junior Ohio DT

Nebraska was active on September 1, sending out offers to a lot of juniors all around the country. One of those juniors is in Ohio and was surprised and honored at the same time to receive the Nebraska offer. This huge defensive lineman from Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney says that he will make a lot of trips over the coming months and commit before his senior year.

At Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney, state titles are the goal every year. John Simon, a 6-foot-3 and 250-pound junior defensive tackle, said things are going well towards that goal.

"The season has been going well," Simon said. "Every year, before we break, our saying is state champs and that is what we strive to be."

If you are looking for Simon on film, be sure and look up and down the defensive line because he lines up all over the place. "I play a little bit of everything, tackle and end. I play the one, three, five and seven across the line. Just anywhere along the line."

One of the things that is so big about good defensive lineman is that they keep the offensive line off of your linebackers.

"My biggest strength is keeping the offensive lineman off of our linebackers. I can use my hands real well. I can also open up wholes in the offensive line to give our linebackers a chance to make plays."

Simon couldn't say if he was a better run-stopper or pass-rusher. "I don't I like one more particularly more than the other. Playing defensive line is about excitement and having fun with the team mates."

On September 1, when juniors could pick up their written offers, Simon said that four teams were first to extend offers. One of the offers was definitely very exciting to pick up.

"Yes sir, I got Ohio State, Nebraska, Stanford and Akron on September 1. I was very excited about the Ohio State offer. It was what I was hoping for."

"I went up to the Ohio State/Akron game and that was a great experience. I am still going to go and visit all of the schools that have offered me."

Those visits will come throughout the season on unofficial trips as well as through the spring and summer. Simon wants to see everywhere and then make a decision about where to go to school.

"I am really focused on football and my season right now. I'll then go and visit all of the schools and hopefully be able to pick before my senior year."

"I am going to make some other trips this season. I don't know which yet. I will make some trips this fall and then others in the spring and summer."

The Nebraska offer was a bit of a surprise to Simon, in a good way, and he admitted that it was an honor to pick up an offer from the Huskers.

"I wasn't expecting it at all, but it was a great honor to have great schools after you. I was real excited about that offer."

Besides the offer, there hasn't been a lot of communication between Simon and the staff at Nebraska. He said that there would be in the near future. "I haven't really talked to any of the coaches at Nebraska. I was definitely excited about getting that offer."
