Huskers extend another in-state offer

If there is an area that Nebraska can sell that they are back, then it's along the offensive line. The unit this year is very good and still very young. New offensive line coach Barney Cotton has to be happy with what he sees and what he also has seen in this in-state recruit from Creighton Prep. Where do the Huskers sit on his list of favorites?

There aren't spring practices for coaches to check out football players from Nebraska. There's track and athletic period. There are also after school workouts.

Jon Lechner has seen coaches come to Omaha (Nebr.) Creighton Prep all spring. He has also been taking part in track and will see a chance to possibly win state this weekend.

"I am throwing shot," Lechner said. "I actually qualified for state and it's this weekend. The shot is on Friday.

"My best this year is 51'6". That distance puts me at about 9th best in the state this year."

Lechner is sitting on three offers now. The latest offer came just today. "I am up to three offers. I have offers from Wisconsin, Buffalo and Nebraska. Nebraska offered me today, actually."

Lechner heard about the offer from his coaches. He was a little surprised about the timing of the offer, but thought that the offer would get to him eventually.

"I think that Head Coach Bo Pelini called to talk to my coach about offering. I was really flattered to get that offer, so early.

"I thought I would have to go to their camp to get an offer. I am still going to their camp this summer. I thought I would get offered there. It's kind of surprising."

Lechner sees himself as a road-grader for the run-game. At 6-foot-6 and 320-pounds, Lechner can win the battle of leverage.

"I would have to say run blocking. I get down real low and I have really good leverage. I can drive a guy off of the line."

Lechner was in Lincoln for the spring game. After getting a chance to see Nebraska, up close, he thinks he could be a good fit. "I think that I would fit in pretty well. They started running the ball more. I like that."

Lechner has a lot of summer camps planned right now with Big 12 and Big 10 schools. "I am going to camps at Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Kansas, Iowa, Iowa State and Nebraska this summer."

Despite getting that Nebraska offer, an offer from the in-state school, Lechner still says that the Huskers are not on top of his list of favorites. "I would have to say that Wisconsin is still my number one. Nebraska is definitely in my top three."
