Post Practice with the Huskers

The team went full pads today as they approach the annual Red/White Scrimmage to be held this Saturday at 1:00 P.M. central time. Check out the quick notes from practice today along with full post practice audio with Defensive Line Coach Carl Pelini.

Practice Notes:

The team went full pads today inside Hawks Championship Indoor Center

ot in attendance was junior wide receiver Niles Paul, who will be out for the remainder of Spring practices, including the Spring Game. Paul was arrested early Sunday morning for suspicions of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license as well as minor in possession of alcohol. Head Coach Bo Pelini issued a statement where he indicated Paul would be suspended for the rest of the Spring.

Also not practicing for the second week was junior running back Roy Helu Jr. Since an injury apparently suffered in a scrimmage the previous weekend Helu has been at practice, but has not been able to participate. Coach Pelini said earlier last week about Helu's condition that it was minor, but they felt comfortable enough with where he is now they didn't feel it was necessary to push him through the Spring. While it's not definite at this point, it is unlikely that you will see Helu participate in this weekend's scrimmage.

Toward the end of today's practice redshirt freshman quarterback Kody Spano was helped to the locker room following an injury suffered during practice. Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback Coach Shawn Watson said that Spano got "dinged up", and that he would check on his status to see what the exact nature of the injury might be.

The following audio is with Defensive Line Coach Carl Pelini, where he talks about who has taken hold of that number one spot at defensive tackle, who will likely back u along with who could back up senior defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh this season.

Pelini also talked about the competition at secondary, where some of the linebackers fit in and he touched on the format of the scrimmage this weekend, including a potential system for how they will divide the teams. Last year Nebraska conducted a draft, where both coaches and players picked teams. It's not for certain if they will use a similar format this year.
