Busy evaluation time

The start of the evaluation period is always a bit interesting. Players get their real first glimpse of college coaches at their school to see them. Tobi Okuyemi admitted that it's been a little hectic by his school and he had a pretty good idea who the schools were that had been there. Beyond that, Okuyemi talked about the spring game in Lincoln, Nebr.

Tobi Okuyemi has seen a steady stream of colleges come through Plymouth (Minn.) Wayzata during the evaluation period. The 6-foot-3 and 235-pound defensive end started to name off who has been at his high school.

"It's been pretty busy, actually," Okuyemi said. "This past week, Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Air Force, Minnesota and that is pretty much about it."

Okuyemi is sitting on six offers as of right now. That number, with the busy evaluation period, should rise on occasion for Okuyemi. He said that the seventh could be coming any day.

"I have six offers currently. They are from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska and Vanderbilt. I think that Michigan State is pretty close to offering, but I am not sure."

A few weeks ago, Okuyemi was able to head to Nebraska to check out their spring game. The visit to Nebraska really exceeded all expectations for Okuyemi that he had for that visit.

"I liked it. It was a really good environment. I got to meet the coaches, some of the players and I got a chance to get a feel of the Nebraska legacy. The visit was a lot more than I expected. I didn't think that it would be that big of a deal for a spring game, but 77,000 fans were there and it was great."

Okuyemi has the size that people look for in their defensive ends. More than that, Okuyemi has the feet and the athleticism that is needed to play linebacker in some situations. He is being looked at to play both at the next level.

"Mostly everyone is looking at me to play defensive end. Some are talking about some linebacker maybe and dropping back into pass coverage. I am just explosive on the field. If the opportunity is there for me to make the play, then I will make it."

The trip to Nebraska was the last one for Okuyemi that he had planned. He isn't even sure if there are any camp plans with his team, but he does have basketball this summer. He had a tournament this weekend in fact.

"I don't have any more trips or anything like that planned. As far as camps go, I really am not sure. I need to talk that over with my team mates and see what we are going to do.

"I do play AAU basketball. In fact, I just got back from a tournament and we just lost the final game. I play the "4" or "5". I don't really know what I am averaging. It's very up and down."

Helped lead the Trojans to a 14-0 mark and a Class 5A title as a junior. Named third team All-Metro by Minneapolis Star Tribune.
