Up in Lincoln

After talking to Head Coach for Arlington (Texas) Martin, Bob Wager, one of his players has recently pulled in some offers and interest because of some diversification. Up to his senior year, Donovan Johnson has really just played on offense. A school the size of Martin doesn't need to play their player's both ways, but playing Johnson on defense has opened some eyes, even his own.

At 6-foot-3 and 250-pounds, Donovan Johnson was a key part to the offensive success that Arlington (Texas) Martin has had by being dependable as an offensive lineman. But, a little experiment to try his hand at defense has Johnson getting offers and looks to play along the defensive line.

One offer that has come in for Johnson is from Nebraska. According to Martin Head Coach, Bob Wager, the offer could be for offense or defense, but that Nebraska has been thorough. The Nebraska staff is getting a good look at Johnson as he is up at camp right now in Lincoln.

"I am up in Lincoln right now," Johnson said. "Today, I got here and I just started doing the camp session. I am here for the camp and also to take a visit around the campus.

"It's pretty cool so far. All of the coaches seem pretty easy to work with. It took me a while to do what I needed to do at the camp, but it's been alright."

According to Coach Wager, he thought that Nebraska might want Johnson on either line. After a day of working out in Lincoln, it's pretty clear to Johnson where Nebraska is looking at him to play.

"I worked only on the defensive line today. As of right now, it seems that Nebraska really wants me more as a defensive lineman instead of on offense."

Johnson is a relative newcomer to defense, but that doesn't affect his decision about which position he would prefer to play. At this point, Johnson prefers to play defense.

"Right now, I do want to play defense. Since I was on the offensive line, all I did was sit there and block and not do anything. I want to be more active and make more plays."

The Huskers are one of a handful of teams to step up and offer the two-way lineman. While the Huskers will make Johnson's list, he isn't real sure what that list is going to look like as of yet.

"I have an offer from Nebraska. I also have offers from Kansas State, TCU, UTEP, Iowa State, Louisiana-Monroe and UNLV are the ones that I can think of right now. Nebraska is definitely on my list. I don't have a real set list."

The Huskers were able to host Johnson first this summer. After the trip to Lincoln, Johnson has two more trips a little closer to home that he plans to make. He plans on taking all of his official visits and then make a decision at the end of the year.

"Nebraska is the first visit that I am taking this summer. I have two more planned. I am going to TCU and UTEP because they are close to my home. I would like to decide by the end of my senior season and plan on taking all five official visits."
