What does Joe know?

With a pair of commitments in the last few days, some Wildcat fans have turned their attention to three-star linebacker Joe Gilliam, who is ranked as the No. 20 middle linebacker in the nation. With speculation about Gilliam and a pending commitment, Purple Reign went to the source to ask Gilliam if NU is still in play, and when he plans to decide.

Whether caused by action in the rumor mill or simply a case of wishing thinking, there has been commitment talk among Northwestern fans about Joe Gilliam, a three-star linebacker from Indianapolis who has been offered by NU and numerous other schools.

With the Wildcats having nabbed receiver Rashad Lawrence and offensive lineman Paul Jorgenson in the last week, buzz abounds that Gilliam -- ranked as the No. 20 middle linebacker in the nation -- may be ready to hop on board.

But Purple Reign learned that's just not the case.

In an interview with PR, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Gilliam did confirm that Northwestern is one of five schools he is considering, along with Purdue, Vanderbilt, Nebraska and Stanford. (The Cardinal, by the way, have landed two players sought after by NU in the last few days: safety Devon Carrington and O-lineman Dillon Bonnell.)

But while NU is on the short-list, Wildcat fans shouldn't expect any good news too soon. Gilliam said that he wants to visit each of the five school he's considering, and so far, he has only seen Northwestern and Purdue. And those three remaining trips -- well, they likely won't occur until the fall.

Which means a commitment will come, according to Gilliam, "Either during my season or right after my season."

So, don't hold your breath.

Purple Reign will bring you any news on Gilliam should things change. But at the moment, it looks like the leaves will be falling (or fallen) when Gilliam makes a commitment.
