"I decommitted from Southern Miss, I think I rushed my decision, I just didn't feel right with the decision. I committed to them over the phone, then got to thinking about it, and changed my mind."
What teams are you looking at now?
"Nebraska, Virginia, Texas Tech, Utah and Kansas State. I've got offers from all those schools and I like what I've seen from them so far. Those are the schools I'd like to take my official visits to."
Judging by your favorites, I take it leaving home for school wont be a problem.
"Yeah, I'm trying to get out of here and see what else is out there. I've lived in Louisiana all my life, leaving would probably be good for me."
When did Nebraska start recruiting you? And do you know anything about the Husker program?
"Nebraska started recruiting me during track season, one of their coaches came by my school, but I only saw him one time. Then I started getting a lot of letters from coach J.P., telling me all about Nebraska. Matter of fact I'm going to give coach J.P. a call tonight.
"And when I got the offer I did already know a little about Nebraska. I knew they were real good back in the day, one of the best teams in the nation. I like that they play in the Big 12, and they have coach Bo up there now. Bo held it down at LSU, he made a big difference with the team, look at them now that he's gone.
"That is why Nebraska is recruiting down here now, he knows we have a lot of talent around here, Louisiana is where it's at."
Do you play any other sports in high school besides football?
"I just run track and play football. I'm actually the state champion in the long jump. I also run on all the relays."
What's the number on that state record long jump?
"I got a 23.9, I just did it again about an hour ago."
That is some serious explosiveness, what positions do you play on the high school level?
"I'm just a defensive back, both safety and corner. Colleges all like me at corner though, and that is where I like playing best. I might do some kickoff and punt returns this year too."
Why all the offers, talk about your strongpoint's on the football field.
"I always highpoint the football, it is mine, that is just the way I think. I always try to lay the receiver out too, just hit them hard every chance I get. I like a lot of contact."
Urell has already attended camps at LSU and Tennessee, but has no other plans for the summer. When asked about a timeframe for a final decision on his commitment, he stated "I need to take my officials before I make a choice, I don't want to make the same mistake twice". Big Red Report will keep tabs on the recruitment of Urell Johnson, and bring you the information as we get it.
