Waiting it out

If there is one thing about Derron Smith and his official visit to Nebraska it's that it didn't hurt. The Huskers were already in the lead for Smith, but that official visit really cemented them at the top. Now the Huskers have to thwart off some late suitors that are coming after Smith. When can Nebraska expect Smith to go public with a decision?

Derron Smith can't complain. The 5-foot-10 and 173-pound cornerback from Banning (Calif.) hasn't had a lot change since the last time Big Red Report caught up with him.

"Things are going pretty good," Smith said. "Nothing too major has happened. Nothing really is new or going on."

That is until you remind Smith about an interception that is making it's way around the Internet. Smith has a one play, YouTube clip that will just make you sit back and say ‘no way'.

"Oh yeah. I was kind of playing of middle linebacker/rover. I was really kind of spying the quarterback and he dropped back so I dropped back.

"I guess the #2 receiver ran a post and the running back ran a seam so they were in the same vicinity. I saw him throw it so I just went to it.

"I went to it and the running back was in the way so I jumped, reached one arm in there just to bat it down and I felt like I had a grip on it. I brought it in and took it off."

Big Red Report hasn't spoken with Smith since his official visit to Nebraska. It was then that he was talking about another official visit, but nothing has happened yet.

"I don't have any visits set up yet. Nevada called me a few weeks ago and wants me to set up an official visit. I am waiting for them to call back.

"I am going up to UCLA this weekend when they play Washington. I have been talking to Washington. So, it's going pretty good, but nothing new."

With the Nebraska official visit under his belt he says that Huskers are still on top. Nebraska hasn't hit him up about committing or pressured him in anyway which he likes.

"They are still at the top. The official visit really helped. My family and I really felt comfortable out there, but I am still going to be patient with my decision."

While Nebraska isn't pushing for a commitment it's allowing time for things to happen on Smith's side. Derron wants some other schools to review his film and see what they have to say.

"I don't know yet because I know that I don't want to rush it. I want to give some of the PAC 10 schools some time to review my film and maybe get an offer.

"Whenever I come to my decision and I know where I am going to go then I will go ahead and make it. As of right now, I really don't know when that will be."

The other thing that Smith is waiting to hear on is if Nebraska still likes him just as a cornerback or also as an athlete to possibly play offense. He plans to ask about it this week.

"I am supposed to talk to Coach Bo Pelini some time later this week. I will bring that up because he wanted my film so, but I haven't talked to them about that yet."
