Someone cut the strings

Can I beat a dead horse? On the eve before the awarding of the Heisman Trophy (did I really just write that?), it seems we have a fairly overwhelming thought, but an even more underwhelming realization: The best player doesn't always get the Heisman. Yeah, hardly an epiphany.

I believe Ndamukong Suh is the best player in college football.

Considering the team I cover, that would normally come off as a completely biased opinion, the obvious thought being that my familiarity with this candidate has brainwashed me into not appreciating the other candidates who are at least as worthy.

After all, he's just a defensive tackle.

But these aren't normal times. This isn't a normal player.

This is Ndamukong Suh

A defensive tackle who intercepts passes and takes them back for touchdowns. A 6-4, 300 lbs. behemoth who was amongst his team's leaders in pass break ups and he finished the season holding the lead in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks and blocked kicks.

This is a man who sacked Colt McCoy 4.5 times in the Big 12 Title game, more times on his own than any team had sacked the fellow Heisman contender his entire lengthy career.

Some call that game against the Longhorns where Suh dominated like few you will ever see, regardless of the side of the ball, the difference between a defensive tackle being nominated for the Heisman, because it was novel versus a player being nominated, because he was indeed one of the best in the country.

Here's where it gets interesting, or if you are one of the avid followers of the Big Red, frustrating.

I was listening to the Scott Van Pelt Show with Van Pelt along with Ryen Russillo. Both of them said that they thought Ndamukong Suh was the best player in college football, but both also said that they would vote for Stanford running back Toby Gerhart.

Huh?

For the record, neither has a vote, but many who think just like them, do.

Unfortunately, "Fear" of a player can't be quantified or Suh might very well be a shoo-in for the Heisman even now.

Phil Taylor of CNN/SI, left Suh off of his top three, and gave the following as his reason for doing so:

"As for Ndamukong Suh, he very nearly made my ballot, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who says he should have. But given the traditional parameters for the award, I felt Gerhart was No. 1."

OK, I am going to be a bit redundant here, but huh?

The traditional parameters of the award.

That's the rub, isn't it?

The hypocrisy of the Heisman Trophy has become so engrained that people just follow suit even if they don't necessarily think that's the way it should be.

They think Suh is the best, but they are going to vote for someone else?

In that same article, Mark Godich voted Suh third, saying that the knee-jerk reaction was to vote for Suh following his performance against Texas. He added that Alabama running back Mark Ingram, who he picked to win it, was the biggest reason why Alabama was where they are right now.

Really?

  • I thought Alabama had the number two defense in the country
  • I thought Alabama had the best freshman receiver in the country in Julio Jones
  • I thought Alabama had one of the best offensive lines in the country
  • And I could have sworn when listening to a draft prospectus when talking about Ingram who we have to remember is still just a sophomore, there were some experts like ESPN's Todd McShay who argued that Ingram wasn't even the best back on his own team, speculating that fellow Bama-back Trent Richardson might be more talented, overall. He even speculated that even if Ingram wins the Heisman now, he might not even start for the Tide all of next season.

Suh had a great defense around him, no doubt about that. But how much of that defense was geared around Suh himself? Defensive Line Coach Carl Pelini has repeatedly said that their scheme isn't conducive to interior linemen getting big numbers. But Suh did, leading his team in tackles his last two years with the Huskers.

But while Ingram had a defense which almost completely took the pressure off their own offense, and a great offensive line to run behind, Suh and his defensive cohorts had one of the worst offenses in the country.

It's different when the offense gets all the snaps, and everyone figures that will only equal more success for all the skill-players involved. When it's the defense that gets more snaps than the offense, that usually spells trouble, not opportunity.

Alabama's defense was on the field for an average of 59 plays per game this year. Nebraska's defense was on the field a full 10 snaps per game more.

Almost 70 plays per game, and Suh came out during those games maybe five times per game. Sometimes not even that much.

This doesn't even include the obvious notion that most (but obviously not all) seem to realize:

When was Ingram ever double-teamed before he even got the ball?

Suh saw one-on-one blocking this year almost never. When he did, it usually spelled disaster for the opposition.

That was Suh's season.

Double-team, triple-team, cut-blocks and illegal chops and more holding than you can imagine. It was in that Big 12 title game that you saw just a glimpse of what Suh had to deal with all season as senior center Chris Hall was holding Suh by the right part of his chest pad, pulling his jersey back to expose his one free gargantuan arm, which wrapped up McCoy behind the line of scrimmage.

You want the equivalent to that in running back terms?

Ingram gets hit in the backfield from one side before he even gets the ball;   Is expected to still get the hand-off with his free arm and then get positive yards.

There's no way to quantify what Suh did, and therein lies the problem with this award, other than the seemingly built-in bias.

12 sacks?

Well, why couldn't it be 20?

82 tackles?

It should be over a hundred

Three blocked kicks?

Who cares?

There is just nothing sexy enough about Suh's stats that anyone is going to fall over and vote purely on that. And because this seems to be one of the first years anyone even noticed a defensive player, they aren't really sure what to think.

No defensive player has won it, after all. And please, save the Woodson speech. We all know that for as unbelievably good as he was, had he not had those snaps on offense and opportunities in special teams, he wouldn't have won it either.

Though, cornerbacks are sexier than DTs.

If Suh could have intercepted 10 balls, yeah, that's something you can get your head around, right?

As it is, it's been nice to see the landslide of praise Suh has gotten lately, for something each of us fortunate enough to watch him every day, have been witnessing for over a couple of years now. It took former Husker Defensive Line Coach John Blake the recruiter, to get him to Nebraska. But it took Bo and Carl Pelini the coaches, to get out of him what those who preceded him didn't seem to be able to.

His best.

Now we sit here wondering if his best will be given the honor of being the best.

Reality says it won't.

Because of what some have admitted, they don't vote with their head. They vote with this predisposed mindset that tells them they can't vote for a defensive tackle. Not number one, anyway. They can't. It's like asking water not to be wet.

How many more times will you hear, read or watch someone take the opinion that yes, they do indeed think Ndamukong Suh is the best player in the country.

But they just aren't going to vote that way.

Why?

Well, that's what they are supposed to do.

It's not that Suh should be considered the best. I think that, but that doesn't mean it's true. It's just the notion that someone thinks he's the best, but still votes for someone else.

The integrity of this trophy usually hangs by a thread each year, many thinking about many other years where players perceived as more deserving, didn't get their just reward.

That thought usually stems from a voting process where the criteria seems to be simple: allegiances to teams you used to play for, coach or cover; conference in which the team you played for, coached or covered, competes; regions of the country in which the school you went to, coached or covered, exists.

After that is satisfied, and you haven't actually been able to weed out of a player, then it's to the position priority: Quarterback, running back, wide receiver and then whatever pick you find to be the most novel so you can feel better about yourself in the morning, but all the while still taking the opinion that if there is a single quarterback or running back worth voting for, they are getting the award, because that's just what you do.

For the record, if a running back does win it, it should be Toby Gerhart.

What Ingram was to Alabama is nothing compared to Gerhart, who bested Ingram in both rushing yards on the season as well as touchdowns scored. Ingram's defense is amongst the best. Stanford's defense is amongst the worst, ranking 85th out of 120 teams.

But is Gerhart the best player in the country?

Maybe

I don't think so, but I have had the luxury of watching almost every snap of every game Suh has played in this year and the year before.

It's not a luxury in what it allows me to know about him in respect to the much more publicized positions of running back and signal-caller. It's a luxury, because I have had a chance to see perhaps the best defensive player I'll ever see in my life.

I don't know if that means he deserves the Heisman. Probably not. But what's funny and depressing is that I hear local, regional and even national media-types, from analysts to play-by-play people, say the exact same thing, but then say they are going to vote another way.

I don't get it. Well, I do, but I guess I don't.

It's sad that it would seem the puppets know they are puppets, but even with a scissors in their hands they still don't want to cut the strings.
