The running game is a must

Because Nebraska has basically resolved itself to run the ball and keep running it if they can, when trying to figure out how that might work against Arizona in the Holiday Bowl, I figured we would take a look at how Nebraska did during the course of the season.

Before the season even began, the Husker running attack was hit hard when junior Quentin Castille was dismissed from the team. A sledgehammer with athleticism, Castille had gotten his ball-handling issues basically handled, and it really looked like this was going to be his break out year.

With him, Roy Helu Jr., Nebraska's leading rusher last year, this was perhaps one of the most potent tandems in the Big 12.

His loss meant a big change, because the seemingly realistic depth chart just didn't give Nebraska that force to compliment Helu's finesse, though, Helu proved over and over that he could be very physical, too.

Then came in freshman Rex Burkhead. It was unlikely that a freshman could

get in this year, because it hadn't been done before, at least not effectively, since the "West Coast" offense arrived at Nebraska. Much of it had to do with the blocking and running backs simply blowing assignments on blitz pick ups.

But Burkhead did manage to crack the line up, and going into this season he was a firm number two.

Without the kind of physical back that Nebraska had become accustomed with Castille and prior to him, Cody Glenn,  who is now playing linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts – Helu was going to have a lot of weight on his shoulders.

The irony came for Helu when it was his right shoulder which was injured against Missouri, an injury he had real issues playing with over the next four weeks.

Then came the rest of the running backs as Nebraska was now down what would have been their top three backs had Castille stayed and Burkhead secured his spot at number three. Helu had become a real liability carrying the ball, best illustrated by his two almost completely unforced errors against Iowa State.

Enter: freshman running back Dontrayevous Robinson. At around 220 pounds and a little heavier build than Helu, he was the closest thing Nebraska had to a physical-type of back. But Robinson also had good moves which allowed him at times, to bounce plays outside.

But as with any freshman running back, as it was with Burkhead, blocking was a chore and at least for Robinson, he fumbled against Iowa State as well.

It was around the Oklahoma game that Helu seemed to back to as healthy as he had been since before the Missouri game. That proved key, because the passing game was almost nonexistent, the Huskers finishing with 39 yards in the air. And it was only Helu who managed any measure of success. Helu accounted for all but three of Nebraska's 141 rushing yards on the game.

Following that game, with Helu seemingly healthy once again, the Husker staff didn't shy away from using him to the fullest, giving the California native 28 carries in the following game against Kansas and then 26 more against Kansas State.

Against the Jayhawks, the Huskers ran for 214 yards, their second highest total of the year. Helu had 162 of those yards.

Against Kansas State is when Burkhead reappeared, but he was obviously given fairly limited reps.

San Diego's Best Western Hacienda has special Holiday Bowl Hotel Rates for Husker fans!

It was against Colorado where Burkhead saw the most reps of the entire season, carrying it 10 times on a single drive. The Texas native finished with 18 carries for 100 yards, while Helu carried the ball 14 times for just over 50.

Below you will see Nebraska's rushing output versus the various opponents this year, along with the average yards per game that opponent gave up the entire season. The green-colored font indicates when they were above the opponent's average and red indicates contests in which they were below.

*Indicates the games where junior running back Roy Helu Jr. was nursing a shoulder injury
**Indicates when freshman running back Rex Burkhead returned to the line up

In the first game where Nebraska finished in the negative (Louisiana-Lafayette), junior quarterback Zac Lee was extremely efficient, hitting 22-of-26 for 300 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. That 300-yard performance was his second of the season, the first coming in game two where he threw for 358 against Arkansas State.

You will also notice that during the time where Helu's injury was apparently the most severe, in all but one of those contests did Nebraska finish with rushing yards below the average given up by the opponent they faced on that day.

In the Missouri game, where Helu's injury is thought to have first occurred, he actually carried the ball 17 times before the injury, totaling 83 yards. His 18th carry was the one which took him into the end zone for the go ahead score on the Tigers, which was the last offensive play for Nebraska.

Against Colorado, the Huskers ran the ball 40 times, the fourth straight game where the Huskers rushed the ball 40 times or more. That netted them 144 yards against the Buffs, which was as you saw above, below the average Colorado had given up on the year.

Against Texas, while the yardage was meager for the Huskers, getting only 67 yards on the game. That was actually above the average the Horns' number one rush defense in the country, had given up that season. Going back to the Oklahoma game, the Sooners actually netted negative yards, running it for -16 yards on the game.

OK, now that we have had a chance to go through the numbers, what can we infer from it when projecting what Nebraska can do against Arizona in the Holiday Bowl.

Well, first of all, Arizona ranks 22nd in the country in rush defense, allowing 111.92 yards per game.

Secondly, they have faced some good rushing teams, Oregon averaging over 236 yards per game with their spread-option attack; Stanford averaging over 224 yards with Heisman runner up, running back Toby Gerhart and one-time Heisman candidate Jahvid Best, whose Cal team averaged over 175 yards on the ground per game this year.

Against Oregon the Wildcats allowed 175 yards on the ground. Against Stanford they allowed 175. Against California, they allowed 176.

What is interesting about those three contests, all but Stanford resulting in losses for Arizona, was the amount of passing yards put on Arizona. The three teams combined for 899 yards passing along with seven touchdowns.

The Wildcats gave up a season-high 434 yards passing to The Cardinal.

It's almost an axiom of coaching that if you can do one aspect really well, it opens up opportunities for everything else. With Nebraska, especially their play-action game from under center, that also definitely applies.

But at least when comparing Nebraska to the averages their opponents have given up this year, it shows that they can run, and when healthy, can actually be fairly effective.

The reason this aspect of the entire game is so very important for Nebraska is that we realize that junior quarterback Zac Lee is not going to sit back in the pocket and sling it all over. They have tried that a few times during the course of conference play, mostly with negative results.

They will absolutely need this running game first, second and even third. At that point, if they can establish it, they can work on trying to get every other aspect of this offense in. And with Arizona's apparent vulnerability against the pass when the running game is working, that makes it all that much more important.
