Casey Young, a wide receiver prospect from Regis
Jesuit high school in Aurora (CO) had a productive junior season with 38
receptions, 600 yards, and 6 touchdowns. He's also been known to make
big contributions on special teams.
"I play wide receiver on offense and I return kickoffs and punts too. Our coach runs a platoon, so nobody goes both ways, and I don't play any defense. I did return the opening kickoff in the playoffs this year for a 97 yard touchdown, in the middle of a blizzard, so that was pretty nice. I also ran the ball on sweeps a few times too, and scored a couple touchdowns."
At 6-foot-2, and 187 pounds his athleticism also shines in another arena, as Casey is an accomplished hurdler for his high school track team.
"I just won state in track last weekend in both the 110 meter high hurdles, and the 300 intermediate hurdles. I ran the 110 in 14.4 seconds, and the 300 was 38.4 seconds. I've been timed in the 100 meter and the 40 yard dash too, my 100 meter time is a 10.8, and I got a 4.48 in the forty."
So far one offer has come in the mail, but as the summer time approaches, he's hoping to see his offer list increase.
"I get a lot of mail from a bunch of programs like Kansas, Utah, Nebraska, Iowa, Boston College and the local schools. I got my first offer from South Dakota, but with all the camps coming up this summer, maybe I can pull in a few more. I think Utah will be my next offer, they seem real close."
It's my understanding you're coming to Lincoln next month for the camp, is there any truth to that?
"Yes Sir, I'm headed out there the night of the 7th (June), and I'm going to the one day camp on the 8th. I actually just spoke to coach Cotton from Nebraska Tuesday night."
Talk to me about that a little, what did coach Cotton have to say?
"He said they are real excited to get me out
there. He said he thought from watching my tape I looked a lot like Nate
Swift. Coach Cotton said he was real pumped for me, and wants me to
come up there and prove to coach Bo, and coach Gilmore that I have what
it takes to play for Nebraska.
"I'm ready for this, and I'm excited to get up there and show them what I'm about. If I remember right, he said they only have three (WR) scholarships to give this year, and I want to be one of them."
I hear there might be a few elite corners at the camp, are you up for the challenge?
"I'll jump to the front of the line every time, and I don't care who is across from me. I'm not coming there to hide anything, I want to show what I got against the best."
Casey also admitted that an offer from Nebraska would be hard to turn down.
"It would be a wish come true, I mean I was
up there for their junior day earlier this year and everything stood out
to me. I really got a chance to hear from the coaches what Nebraska
football is all about. They have great academics, phenomenal coaches,
and they are more about you the individual than just you the football
"I remember when they were talking to us on the junior day, they even said they don't care how many stars I have by my name, they just want tough guys that are dependable and that show up big on Saturdays.
"That stood out to me, because I'm a hard worker that will do whatever it takes to help the team.
"But if I do get the offer, I would just take a minute to talk
things over with my family, and then I would make the commitment. It
just doesn't get bigger than Nebraska football, why would I wait? They
also have that top QB coming in, Jamal, that guy is the real deal. I'd
love to play with a guy like that."
When asked who is favorite player of all-time was, there was
little hesitation "Well I was born and raised a Bronco fan, we've had
season tickets since the 60's. So I'm a huge John Lynch fan, he just had
such a love for the game and had great character".
When it comes to his education, Casey would like to seek a major in Criminal Justice.
Big Red Report will touch base with Casey shortly after his visit to Lincoln to check the status of an offer from Nebraska. If there is any news on that front, we'll bring it to you as soon as possible.
