Lines Have Been Drawn

Husker fans now know who their division opponents will be. Nebraska now knows that there will be an annual opponent from the opposite division that will mirror Ohio State and Michigan. The Huskers also got their 2011 and 2012 conference schedules and it will be a difficult road.

If you weren't fired up for the 2010 season already, because it's only two days away, so let this put you over the top. Yes, Nebraska will host Texas this year, but next year will host Ohio State and travel to Michigan and Penn State.

Yep, no one ever said moving to the Big 10 was going to be easy and the 2011 schedule will be the definition of not easy.

Names for each Big Ten football division will be announced at a later date..

1st Division team:

Michigan State

2nd Division team:

Ohio State
Penn State

You can see that Michigan and Ohio State are in opposite divisions and if this were the Big 12 that game would only take place two out of every four years in a home and home series then two years off.

But, the Big 10 will make that an annual contest and adding to an already great rivalry. The game will remain a season finale for both teams like it has been since 1943. What is interesting is that these two teams could play each other twice now with a Conference Championship game.

So while Nebraska will get to play Michigan every year the Huskers will play Penn State annually just like Michigan will play Ohio State annually. That annual game is an interesting twist to the Big 10 conference schedule for Nebraska and Penn State that will fall two weeks before the final game of the regular season.

It looks like the Colorado replacement game around Thanksgiving will put Nebraska up against Iowa which is another good border war that could lead to interesting games for years to come.

What people might have to start considering is a traveling trophy between Penn State and Nebraska for their cross-divisional rivalry. While not cross divisional rivals Iowa and Minnesota play for a bronze pig, Minnesota and Michigan play for a little brown jug and Wisconsin and Minnesota play for Paul Bunyan's axe as some examples.

So sit back and get ready for this Saturday as Nebraska takes on Western Kentucky in the 2010 season opener and also start thinking a little about what life will be like in season's come.
