Catching Up with the Future Pack: Week 14

And then there was just one. Just one player from Nevada's current class of 2014 verbal commitments is still alive in high school playoff action. A few were eliminated, while Cris Solano's San Fernando squad finished an undefeated season as the Los Angeles City Section champs. It's also getting to be that time of year when some recruits start to rethink their initial commitments.

James Butler - RB - St. Francis HS - Wheaton, IL
St. Francis finished 5-5 on the season and lost in the opening round of the Illinois High School football playoffs. James Butler was selected to the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Class 5A All State Team as a running back. He was also named the 2013 Suburban Christian All-Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Drew Celis - WR - Marin Catholic HS - Kentfield, CA
Top seeded Marin Catholic saw it's 12-game winning streak and it section title hopes come to an abrupt end this past weekend, in a 54-38 blow out loss to El Cerrito. El Cerrito jumped out to a 27-3 halftime lead and never allowed this one to get close. Marin Catholic made uncharacteristic mistakes all game long and faced a Gaucho team that was just too quick and too explosive.  Drew Celis caught 2 touchdown passes, one for 31 and one for 58, while fighting through double coverage all game long. He led all receivers in the game with 8 catches for 153 yards.

Wyatt Demps - WR, S - Pleasant Grove HS - Elk Grove, CA
The 7th seeded Pleasant Grove Eagles season came to an end in the Semi-Finals of the CIF Sac-Joaquin section playoffs as they fell to 12-1 3rd seeded Oak Ridge 26-20. Oak Ridge lost the following week, 49-17 to section champion Folsom. Pleasant Grove led 7-6 at the half but Oak Ridge battled back to take a 20-7 lead late in the 3rd quarter. Wyatt Demps caught 2 Dre Terrell touchdown passes, a 45 harder off of a flea flicker to make the score 20-14 with 2:27 left in the 3rd but Oak Ridge answered with another 6 points to build a 26-14 lead going into the 4th quarter. Another Demps touchdown closed the gap to 26-20 with 1:07 left but the onside kick was unsuccessful and Oak Ridge hung on for the win. It was Oak Ridge's second win over Pleasant Grove this season, they beat the Eagles 28-14 back on November 1st.

Hunter Fralick - QB - Spanish Springs HS - Reno, NV
Silver and Blue Sport recently sat down with Hunter, you can read that story here. Spanish Springs was eliminated from the Northern Nevada playoffs by Carson on Nov. 8th. Fralick ended his senior season at Spanish Springs with 2,489 yards passing, 14 touchdowns and 5 interceptions as well as 1,222 yards rushing with 19 rushing touchdowns.

Victor Gonzalez - WR - Norte Vista HS - Riverside, CA
Victor Gonzalez had 7 catches for 256 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 1st half but the Braves were behind 42-18 at the half and fell 66-24 in the end to 13-1 Citrus Hill. You can view view of each of Gonzalez's touchdowns of 85, 35, and 66 yards on Fox Sports Prep Zone. Norte Vista lost in the CIF Southern Section championship game to 13-1 Citrus Hill. Gonzalez finished with 57 catches, 1,347 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season.

Jarid Joseph - OLB - Lakewood HS - Lakewood, CA
Lakewood High School finished 5-6 on the season and was eliminated from the CIF Southern Section playoffs by Alemany in a 48-29 loss.

Jacob Lacaden - OLB - St. Louis School - Honolulu, HI
St. Louis' season ended 10/19 with a playoff loss to Kamehameha. The Crusaders finished 6-3 and ranked 4th in the state of Hawai'i.

Humberto Lopez - OT - College of the Desert - Palm Desert, CA
College of the Desert finished a disappointing season at 1-9 in the Southern California Football Association.

Kalei Meyer - DT - Kamehameha HS - Honolulu, HI
Kamehameha was eliminated from the playoffs on 10/25 by top ranked Punahou. The Warriors finished the season 9-2 with their only 2 losses coming against Punahou.

Matt Moen - TE - Steele HS - Cibolo, TX
Steele's 12 game winning streak came to an end as the Knights, down 1 point with 24 seconds left after scoring to a touchdown to close the gap to 42-41, decided to go for the game winning two-point conversion instead of playing for overtime. The game winning pass came up short and Steele lost to 12-2 Johnson. Steele trailed 35-21 going in to the 4th quarter but scored 20 points in the final 12 minutes to nearly complete the comeback. Matt Moen had a 5 yard touchdown reception on 4th and goal in the closing minutes of the 3rd quarter.

Elijah Moody - DB - Long Beach Poly - Long Beach, CA
Long Beach Poly's season came to an abrupt end at the hands of Southern California football powerhouse Mater Dei 30-0 in the CIF Southern Section (Pac 5 Division) semi-finals. The Jackrabbit offense couldn't get anything going against the Mater Dei defense, posting negative yardage in the 1st half. It was a measure of revenge for Mater Dei, who lost to Long Beach Poly in the Championship game last season.

Ahki Muhammad - WR/RB - James Logan HS - Union City, CA
5th seeded Logan was eliminated from the CIF North Coast Section football playoffs with a 67-44 loss to 4th seeded Deer Valley. Deer Valley held a 15 point half time lead before blowing the game open with a 28 point 4th quarter. Muhammad took a brutal hit from a Deer Valley defender and missed several series but did return to the game. He rushed for a 22 yard TD run early in the game before going out with the injury.

Kevin Nutt - RB, CB - Edison HS - Fresno, CA
Kevin Nutt recently reopened his recruitment and says he will take additional visits before making his final decision. Nutt's high school coach had said recently that other programs were starting to talk to Kevin and were offering him as a running back. While most project Nutt as a defensive back at the collegiate level, Kevin's wishes may lay more on the offensive side of the ball and that would certainly weight heavily on his final decision.

Cliff Porter - DE, OL - Hug HS - Reno, NV
Hug High closed out a winless 2013 with a 47-0 rout at the hands of rival North Valleys.

Asauni Rufus - DB - Bakersfield HS - Bakersfield, CA
Bakersfield routed Clovis North 60-21 to take the Central Section Championship. Asauni Rufus completed 8 of 9 passes for 162 and 2 touchdowns and also rushed 13 times for 166 yards and 3 more touchdowns. Bakersfield was selected to the 2013 CIF Regional Football Championship Bowl and will take on 12-1 Mission Hills in the Division I South bracket.

Brandon Scott - TE - Yucaipa HS - Yucaipa, CA
Yucaipa lost in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs 53-33 to 7-4 Charter Oak. Brandon Scott nearly single handedly won the game for the Thunderbirds with 16 catches for 215 yards and 5 touchdowns. Sadly, Scott's phenomenal game wasn't enough to overcome a 21 point first quarter deficit. Scott finished his senior season with 64 catches for 1,260 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Cristian Solano - QB - San Fernando HS - San Fernando, CA
San Fernando saw a 28-14 halftime lead evaporate to South Gate as they fell behind 32-28 in the second half. However, QB Cris Solano calmly led the tigers on a six-play 86 yard drive and scored with 2:02 remaining to take back-to-back City Section titles. Solano, playing defense, also jarred loose a South Gate reception on 4th and 10 that sealed the win. Solano completed 18 of 26 passes for 274 yards. Despite it's 15-0 record and back-to-back section titles, San Fernando was not selected to the CIF State Division II regional bowl game.

Duran Workman - S - Saddleback College - Charlston, WV
Saddleback lost 25-14 to Citrus College in the 2013 Beach Bowl. Duran Workman did not register in tackles in the game.

Blake Wright - RB - Edison HS - Fresno, CA
Blake Wright carried 33 times for 197 yards and a touchdown in Edison's disappointing opening round, 21-20 loss to Central.
