Boise State guard Anthony Drmic
Going into the week Drmic, who missed the Broncos last game against
Wyoming, was questionable for the Nevada game. The team has announced
that he will play. That's bad news for Wolf Pack fans. Drmic is the
catalyst for this Boise State team who thrives on the drive and kick
offense. How do you defend Drmic? In these two team's last meeting
Nevada found out why it's so hard to contain Drmic. He went 3-3 from
three-point range and 3-6 from inside the arc scoring 17 points and
showing that he can do his damage from almost anywhere on the court.
Drmic is the third leading scorer in the MWC with 16.9ppg so Nevada
containing Drmic will be an important aspect to watch for this game.
Boise State center Ryan Watkins
Any coach would love a player who can create opportunities on the
offense end without having plays called for him. Watkins is that guy.
Averaging 5.0 offensive rebounds on the year, he gets most of his
11.4ppg from those rebounds and free throw attempts. Last time the
Broncos and Wolf Pack met, Watkins dominated Nevada center A.J. West and
limited him to three points and one rebound. I can guarantee that if
this production from West is duplicated, Nevada will not win. Watkins
was the West stopper, and West was not the Watkins stopper as he scored
11 points with 11 rebounds. This is a key matchup to watch. Points wont
determine the winner of this matchup but rather hustle, defense, and
rebounding will. Between Watkins and West, whichever player gets the
most rebounds, that player's team will win.
Nevada point guard Deonte Burton
Seven points. 1-8 shooting from the field. No this isn't Kevin Panzer's
BEST scoring stat line in his career. (Anyone miss this guy? No? Me
either.) Any way, this is Burton's worst scoring stat line from this
season. It was obvious that the Broncos wanted to limit Burton in the
last matchup and they did just that. They played a packed in zone that
dared the Wolf Pack to jack up threes. While Burton has a lot of
strengths in his game, 3-pt shooting is not one of them. Burton only
makes 31% of his threes, which is not a good rate, especially for a
player who most, including myself, consider a star. On the bright side
Burton affected the last game against the Broncos with rebounding (6)
and assists (5), but Nevada has to have Burton's scoring especially
against the Broncos zone defense. I highly doubt Burton scores 20+ in
this game simply because of the double teams and zone the Broncos will
throw at the Wolf Pack, but 14+ is mandatory for a Nevada upset.
