Nevada Wolf Pack 69, Adams St. 64

AJ West scored a career-high 17 points while adding 18 rebounds with 10 of those being on the offensive end. West made his presence felt all game on both ends of the court and you could really see a drop off when he was not on the court.

The Wolf Pack held Adams State to 33.8 percent shooting and head coach David Carter thinks there is more to come on the defensive side.

“I like where we are defensively, I still think we have a long ways to go, but I like the direction we are headed,” Carter said. “I think in the past we had more breakdowns, we are having less breakdowns and I really like the fact that the new guys are buying into it right now.”

Marqueze Coleman, Michael Perez, West and D.J. Fenner all finished with double-digits in points. The Wolf Pack were without Coleman for a large part of the first half after he picked up three quick fouls.

Nevada turned to true freshman Eric Cooper Jr. to run the point guard position.

“I think that Eric did well, just got a little mentally tired toward the end of the half,” said Carter.

They built a 14-point lead in the first half and led 35 to 24 at halftime.

Michael Perez played a game high 37 minutes and contributed with 12 points and three assists. The game had ups-and-downs but Perez feels like they learned something valuable from the game tonight.

“We showed that we can play in different style of games and we were able to come out with wins,” said Perez. “But moving forward we definitely have to get better.”

The five-point margin may have been closer than the Wolf Pack wanted. Nevada missed 19 free throws going 24 for 43 from the line and allowed 24 offensive rebounds allowing second chance points.

“It’s just a bad shooting night, it happens,” said Sophomore Forward D.J. Fenner. “We are going to get a lot of free-throw shots up tomorrow in the gym. It’s not a concern at all.”

Nevada heads to the Virgin Islands at the end of the week to participate in the 2014 Ezybonds Global Payments US Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.

They face off against Seton Hall on Friday November 21 at 1:00pm. With following games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The other opponents will be Clemson and/or Gardner Webb.
