2016 Football Preview

Mr. John C Fremont will be providing us weekly insights on the Wolf Pack athletic year. John can be reached at jcfremont@silverandbluesports.com

It’s the time of the year again, folks!  Some of you may know me from my Twitter account, @SaturdaysInReno, where I talk about all things Nevada Football and Basketball, along with the Mountain West Conference and college athletics as a whole.

I have a lot of fun with that account, but I’ve always been anonymous and I plan to keep it that way. Mugtang and I traded messages for a while and I thought it’d be fun to have a weekly column on Silver & Blue Sports, where I’ve lurked for years but have never posted.  I think this will be a lot of fun and it will give SBS multiple front page stories each week, with Andrew Maurins still providing his unique insights.

I’m not a professional sports fan in the least, so from May 28th when Nevada Baseball was eliminated from the Mountain West Tournament until now has been a barren wasteland filled with a lot of Crown Royal and confusion on how to spend my days.  The older I get, the longer the offseason takes.

There’s a lot to be excited about on the Wolf Pack front. We have some beautiful new football helmets, featuring a return of the beloved Pack script.  Mackay Stadium has undergone a significant $11.5 million face lift, featuring new and improved seating in the booster sections, a new Club level on the West side and what I’m looking forward to the most, a new video board and sound system.

One of my favorite rites of summer is usually around the 1st of June some of the Nevada sports books will offer their odds for each team to win the conference, along with season win totals. I love looking at these as it really gives an idea of what you’ll be looking at in the fall.

I called most of the sports books in Reno to see what odds they offered and they didn’t have everything I was looking for, so all of these are from the South Point in Las Vegas, which was recommended on Twitter.

Odds to Win the Mountain West Conference

Mountain West Conference Season Win Totals

  • Boise State 10.5
  • San Diego State 8.5
  • Air Force 8
  • New Mexico 7
  • Nevada 6.5
  • Utah State 6.5
  • Colorado State 5.5
  • UNLV 5.5
  • San Jose State 5
  • Fresno State 3.5
  • Wyoming 3.5
  • Hawaii 2.5

Boise State and San Diego State are the clear favorites in this conference, though Air Force could certainly break up the Broncos party if they can beat them for a third time in a row.  These odds also say a lot about each division in the conference, where four Mountain teams have a total that is bowl eligible as compared to just two for the West.

For the Season Win Totals, I think Boise loses two games or more thus making that 10.5 go under. I’m high on SDSU and like that over of 8.5.  They have an interesting OOC schedule, however Cal at home is very winnable (books have Cal at -5.5) and Northern Illinois on the road is a game the Aztecs should win.  Their QB made very few mistakes during MW play last year and Donnel Pumphrey is one of my favorite players to watch in the conference, just give him the ball 25-30 times a game.   I also think that New Mexico goes under and Colorado State goes over.

What are your thoughts on the Season Win Totals and MWC Odds?  How do you think Nevada fairs this year, can they get to 7 wins in the regular season/conference championship?
