I did watch it with our coaching staff so we could learn from it. And what I learned is a lesson I hope our Aggie coaching staff learns......... you have to convert on 3rd down to help your defense. As good as the Alabama defense is, with most likely 3 of the top 10 NFL draft picks in their front 7, if you continually go three and out and can't convert 3rd down you will give up points. The failure of the Bama offense to convert on 3rd down is why Clemson was able to win the game.
We complain about our Aggie defense, but our offense converts about 30% of our third downs and when Tyler Rogers passes on 3rd down we converted only about 20% of them so our defense gets no rest and we wind up giving up a bunch of points. If you want to reduce the other teams scoring then convert on 3rd down.
Because Alabama couldn't convert on 3rd down is why Clemson had the ball for about 10 minutes longer than Alabama and ran over 30 more plays than Alabama. Consequently a defense that is dominant as Alabama's wore down and gave up 35 points and they lost.
So what I also learned is that if a defense with their talent and depth of Alabama can get worn down and give up 21 points in the 4th Q, what kind of chance does our Aggie defense have?
For us at the high school level we are currently working on what we can do to increase our 3rd down conversion rate. Wish us and our Aggies luck!!
