It’s Week 2 of the Western Athletic Conference season, and we’re already looking at a showdown: Saturday’s Cal State Bakersfield game at New Mexico State.
The Roadrunners (10-6 overall, 1-0 WAC) downed the Aggies 57-54 the last time these teams met in the WAC Tournament Finals last March 12, propelling CSUB into its first NCAA Tournament appearance as a D-I program.
NMSU, of course, is the longtime WAC power that had three straight WAC Tournament wins before last season. Needless to say, the word is that the Aggies are pulling out all the stops for Saturday — such as heavy game promotion to hopefully generate a sellout and get the home crowd in a frenzy by game time.
NMSU has won 13 straight, is 15-2 overall and 10-0 at home, so CSUB will have its hands full.
“It’ll be a hostile environment at New Mexico State,” CSUB assistant Benjy Taylor said on Tuesday’s Roadrunner Rundown webcast on Bakersfield.com. “We’ve been to Arizona and BYU, so we’ve been to tough places. I’m sure our guys, in the back of their minds, have been looking forward to this.”
It's game day. I'll be there. I think Barnes gets on my nerves more than any other coach in the WAC. Super whiney coach. I actually like Majerle. He's doing a great job at GCU. He seems to me more subdued as a coach now. The rigors of being a coach does that to you. I watch coach Weir and you can tell he is a rookie with his enthusiasm and determination. I love our coaching staff. I also love it that we took a key coach away from Barnes in Mark Hsu who is also a very good recruiter. Need some revenge tonight. That game in Vegas was a killer for me, especially when Aly Ahmed ran right up to me and flipped me off.
Interesting.. Jack Nixon said Huggins was recruited by ex-Assistant coach Keith Brown. The one alot of us, myself included, thought NMSU needed to part ways with to get some more creative offensive sets for a new era.
Rod Barnes intentionally waits until the last possible second, and sometimes later than that, to put his subs in. You know he does it to keep the pace of this game at as much of a crawl as possible. Weir has been on the refs about this all night long.
