Given our overall level of competition and that Weir hasn't proven he can sustain a program at a high level, I don't think a big time program would want him after just one year anyway. Too much risk and too many good coaches with more experience and better conferences to choose from. Having said that, I would think a couple more seasons like this one and he could get a shot at a bigger richer program.
PW will be at NMSU for awhile. He needs to make a run in the NCAA Tournament. The squad he is putting together for next year could be one that makes a run in the NCAA Tournament. But I think he'll be around for quite awhile.
Fortunately I think Paul will be around for a few years; not because a lack of offers from big schools but because he's fervently dedicated to building this program to where he knows it can be. We are so lucky to have him.
I would hope he is with us for at least 5 or 6 years. If I were him I would only leave for a perennial top 15 type team. A Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana, Arizona, UCLA, a team like that. Where he can win a national championship. There is no point leaving for another mid major, or team with a crappy basketball history football school.
We need to find a way to give this guy a raise. We might need private dollars to do this. Give him as much as we can, who knows this guy could have the same type of success Henson had in his first go around with NMSU.
Yes NMSU not NM State, NMSU sounds so much better. I only buy NMSU gear.
