People have been complaining, myself included, for years about the quality of the WAC after USU/Nevada/Fresno left. Clearly the conference has taken a step forward after an initial dropoff. Next year NMSU, CSUB, and GCU are all going to be legit challengers for WAC title. Not surprisingly, all 3 programs have had stability at the head coach position. Weir was promoted after MM left, Majerle has steadily been building his team to be ready for autobid, and CSUB has recruited athletes that match us position for position. Barnes gets his players to go all out, the best compliment I can give a coach. it kind of reminds me of Duke. I am not a fan of Duke, but whenever I watch them they seem to play with an intensity that never changes.
It's nice to see another WAC team step up and beat a PAC level team at the NIT tournament. I still think UMKC and UVU are right behind in getting to that 18-20 win level. This year the WAC had 3 20 win teams. Next year 4 is a real possibility. As bad as WAC was, I think at least in basketball it is right there with CUSA and Sun Belt. And I don't think there is a big difference between our 3 top teams and MWC top teams. The difference is the MWC goes deeper with good teams. We need Seattle and UTRG to get better. Good job CSUB! Really good win for the WAC heading into next season. Weir, Dan, and Barnes are going to have some battles next year. Looking forward to it.
