In looking at Aggie statistics, as I do frequently, I was caught curious by Billy Joe Price, or Bill Price as he was known in the times he played. He shows as a three-year player for the Aggies from 1959-61. He is enshrined in the New Mexico State Ring of Honor, Hall of Fame, and he stands in 20th place in the 1000 pt club (career scoring). It shows him as a three-year player with a total of 1159 pts scored in 77 games.
I came to find out that in 1957-58 season the NCAA instituted the freshman ineligible rule that was in place for more than a decade. But it wasn't truly followed by all teams until 1958-59 season when the NCAA modified its rule to state that any conference with any team that played a freshman would give up its automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. And it turns out New Mexico State played their star freshman, Bill Price, in the 1957-58 season. This would've made New Mexico A&M (as they were known then) ineligible for postseason tournament participation because he played - they didn't finish well enough to win the Border Conference (Arizona State won it that year).
And so I set forth to find Billy Joe Price's lost points, which could add to his career stats. This task was semi-difficult since New Mexico State doesn't have official stats from that year. But I didn't let it deter me from my quest. I began scouring old newspaper accounts to find the story.
The bottom line is Billy Joe Price scored 154 points in 13 games in the 1957-58 season for New Mexico State. This will move his career scoring total to 1313 points in 90 games and up from 20th in career scoring to 15th.
I'll list the following games in the 1957-58 season and his point totals.
12/2 at Rice 45-72 L -- (unknown point total)
12/4 at Arkansas 50-59 L -- (unknown point total)
12/5 at Tulsa 56-62 L -- 15 points
12/7 at Saint Louis 41-96 L -- (unknown point total)
12/11 Pacific 76-74 W -- 26 points (a newspaper account for this game also says that Price scored 26 points total in the previous four games - Rice, Arkansas, Tulsa and Saint Louis)
12/12 Hamline 55-47 W -- 15 points
12/16 at New Mexico 60-49 W -- 8 points
12/18 Middle Tennessee 82-71 W -- Did Not Play (tells of Price out with the flu)
12/21 at Oklahoma State 55-72 L -- Did Not Play
12/23 at Vanderbilt 59-73 L -- Did Not Play
1/6 Arizona* 71-51 W -- 7 points
1/7 Arizona State* 82-78 W -- 23 points
1/11 at Hardin-Simmons* 65-51 W -- 5 points
1/13 at West Texas A&M* 73-72 W -- 9 points
1/20 Pepperdine 86-69 W -- 23 points
1/25 at UTEP* 58-67 L -- 12 points
It is after the UTEP game that Price was ruled academically ineligible and did not play the remainder of the season.
I will modify the 1000 point club on Wikipedia to augment Price's point total .. and also send a note to New Mexico State of my findings, including newspaper clippings to document.
