At the end of one of the most successful seasons in NMSU basketball history (most wins in history), Paul Weir is the king of the hill. Moccia in an interview when emotions were running high talked about increasing Paul Weirs pay. Since then, we have witnessed the UNM debacle and although they are broke, are somehow able to pay a 1,000,000.00 payout and then a ridiculous contract for a new coach. I think this is a good lesson here. Although I believe in Paul Weir 1000% and he is in now way Craig Neal, the same scenario happened the 1st year of Neal's tenure. UNM, loaded with top notch Steve Alford recruits were nationally ranked and did well in the MWC in Neal's 1st year. Krebs rushed it and increased Neal's pay and the length of his contract. After that, mediocre teams, his own son transferring, etc. Now, Neal has been fired before his contract expired and UNM has to come up with another crooked way to pay out Neal. I love Weir and would love to keep him but would it be wise to already up his salary based on one year when two of his all conference players were Marvin Menzies recruits (Baker & Chuha)? On top of that NMSU is even more broke than UNM. What do you guys think? Give Weir a raise now? Menzies was getting paid $325.000 I think so should Moccia just increase it to that based on Weir's 1st season or wait it out? Chances are if Weir has another 28 win season next year he could be goners so giving Weir a raise now and extending his contract might be fiscally better for NMSU in the long run if Weir has to pay NMSU if he leaves.
