it's been a rough month for basketball fans no doubt. I was shocked and dismayed that Weir left after one season, especially to a rival. I bought into how much he loved the school, the community, and the players. And maybe he really did when he said those things. I don't know the man personally, but he had his team prepared and ready to roll each and every game. Here is my optimistic view for both sports, keeping it short.
Basketball - I simply think Jans is the real deal based off the people have spoken about him and his resume. I am surprised that Huggins is leaving. I wasn't as surprised that Haley left. I have no idea what kind of recruiter Jans or the new assistant is, but I am excited about the game day coaching. If we have to bite the bullet for one year, and it will be a rebuilding year with any further losses, then I will give Jans the benefit of the doubt that we will be back to where we wanted in 2018. Also, I really like how GCU, CSUB, UVU, and UMKC are coming along. Along with UTEP and UNM, that is 12 solid games for fans. I think the 2017 season will be entertaining and fun, with an adjusted expectation from what Weir had coming back. For the money we pay, Jans appears to be a steal and I am betting he pays back Mario and NMSU for giving him his second chance.
Football - First and foremost, another year of FBS. That is no exaggeration. I am extremely thankful to have UTEP coming to AMS, something that won't happen with FCS if and when that happens. I am happy to take a shot at 2 in a row to the school up north. i will be there sporting the Aggie colors. Larry Rose, a healthy Rose, is simply amazing to watch. He is capable of having a once in a generation year for Aggie fans in terms of yardage and TDs if things go right. We have a two headed monster at qb that should be able to put up yards through the air and on the ground. And lastly, we have a defensive coordinator returning finally. Martin has the deck stacked against him with conference and lack of funds, but I think we field a competitive team and win some games.
So I will be renewing tickets for the family once again. I ask that all fans on this site do what they can to support the programs financially. Buy a football ticket and donate it if you aren't in the area. If you are, go the games and bring a friend. Spend money at the games, buy gear and hit up the concessions. Same for basketball. And try and enjoy FBS football and D1 basketball. They should not be taken for granted. I can't wait to take the family out again with the kids. Life is too short not to enjoy the little moments, and for those of us on this site, that includes an emotional attachment to Aggie sports.
