i would rather talk realistically about the football season. Everyone knows what Martin is up against with our program, including possibly not having FBS. Can you imagine trying to recruit against other mid majors in stable conferences and going in and saying, well we aren't sure about the program's future, but come use your eligibility here?? Heck, even if we could have just stayed in the Sun Belt for the last 6 years we would be in better shape. Instead we were independent when he started, then Sun Belt, then going independent again. And that team he inherited was no bueno. Would a faster turn around have been better? Of course. Has he ran a clean program with kids staying out of trouble? Yes. And at least on paper, we look like we can compete with most Sun Belt schools and of course our rivals. You want a coach that will come with here with all our uncertainties for FBS/conference and salary that can come in and win consistently, while playing multiple money games, while staying here, oh and graduating players? So do all of us on this site, in town, and spread out over the country who love the Aggies. Order me 2 of them please, one for football and basketball as well. I personally think Martin has done a good job under the circumstances. He absolutely has to have some key wins this year though. i think he will. And he absolutely needs at least a split of rivalry games, like last year. i think he will.
i think our days of 1 or 2 wins seasons are behind us. i am hopeful for 4-5 this year, and if we played all midmajors would bump that up to 5-6, even a bowl game - gasp! We do have a tough schedule this year. The Sun Belt did us no favors as we get booted out the door. Can we pull an Idaho on the way out? Rose will be Rose, but if Rogers can have a magical season...
I get sick and tired of the few who start these threads. I wish people would look at the entire picture instead of just the win/loss record or my son didn't play so NMSU coaches suck. It's so childish. You need to understand what the entire program faces and uncertainty hurdles that we must face. Also, just use your eyes for the improved play/competitiveness...huge improvement over the Walker years.
Related to the big picture, for those who are expecting a lot different results this year don't hold your breath. Not because the team isn't improved because I think it has, but because our schedule is not easy (thank you Sun Belt). Had we had this team and it being healthy over one of the past two seasons I think we would have been more successful. The stars didn't line up for us then and I certainly don't see the stars lining up with this schedule.
I certainly hope the players and coaches prove me and the haters wrong.
Since Martin has been HC several of his Asst. had sons ( Johnson, Vance, Littlejohn and Locklin) that decided not to play at NMSU. What does that tell you about the state of the current program?
