Starters wise, i think we will match up well. i always worry about the athleticism of P5 teams, so i would be leary of Miami and USC. Our achilles heal will be the second unit. If Jans can find at least one more guard and one more big this summer to give us quality minutes, i will feel a lot better. Let's see what the roster looks like in July. The good thing about this tourney is it's well into the season, meaning the players will have plenty of games played already with a new floor leader running the offense and a new head coach. Middle Tennesse had a great year last year, advancing in the tourney. UVU lost to USU in OT. USC finished 5th in PAC 10, lost to Baylor in tourney. Miami hails from the ACC, enough said there.
i think we should be able to compete with the non P5 teams. I am also assuming we don't lose more players before the season. Jans is going to have his work cut our for him, that's for sure. Between this tourney, UNM and UTEP both being better, a competitive WAC, and our player losses, he is going to be scrambling for a good record. NMSU fans have been asking for more quality opponents for years. Next year we will have plenty.
I think Miami is the clear cream of the crop in the tourney. But they could have a down year. USC could be a favorite on paper hailing from the PAC-12. The rest are very strong mid-majors that are always in the hunt for NCAA berths. I think we match up very well and I'm thrilled we are in the tourney. Says a lot about our program to get an invite like this. And I think the Hawaii bonding thing for the players is a huge plus.
Games against Hawai'i and Davidson are winnable. Hawai'i has hometown edge.
Middle Tennessee has had a heck of a run the past couple of years. I don't know enough about them to know the current state of their roster. Maybe they've lost some seniors or maybe their coach was poached by the Volunteers or Vanderbilt, who took all his recruits with him...No? Was that just us? Anyway, I say this one would be 50/50.
If UTags are in it, I think it would be 50/50 as well.
Last year, I think NMSU could've beaten USC. This year, not so much.
Don't see it happening against Miami or Akron either.
Interesting , Fanrag a top college basketball Internet site has Michigan State rated Number 1,Arizona at number 2, USC at number 8,and UCLA at number 23 in preseason polls. The top recruiting efforts at these schools are carrying a lot of weight .USC has all five starters back and that is why they are being rated so high in preseason polls
