Can we start a thread with Tips and Tricks for this new board?
Stuff to help us navigate, get our default setups the way we want them, create signatures, and the like?
I know we can all struggle through this and make it work, but why reinvent the wheel?
If people have useful Tips and Tricks, Shortcuts, and Methods to make the most of it, maybe they can post them here and we can all learn from their expertise.
This new board setup / forum views / threads/ sigs / EZ Box stuff is not intuitive to me, but in a couple of nights I should do better. I will post anything useful I find here. Hope others do the same.
You may have already figured it out, but it is pretty easy to create an avatar for yourself. An avatar is what is seen underneath your name (for me it is the cursive AGGIES). to do so, go into my profile (on the right), then in the upper right hand corner, in the Crimson colored header, there is an "edit profile." Just under that is a button to change your avatar. You can choose from ones that they have, or you can upload your own. I believe the biggest an avatar can be is 100 X 100. Just upload it, and viola, you now have an avatar showing.
Also, to get this board to look the most like the old board, make sure you have your preferences for Topic View set to List. It's easier on my eyes anyway, and it was the default on the old board.
Other than that, I can't seem to get my signature to work for me, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.
Okay folks, in an effort to make your posting experience a bit better, I am going to try to provide some insite on some work arounds until ALL the features are in place.
Emoticons: Okay, the emoticons on this site suck. We know this, the developers know this, God knows this, and hopfully it will get fixed. In the mean time, my suggestion is to bookmark the following page somewhere: http://redskins.scout.com/3/emoticons.html . Then, if you need them, they are all there and you can copy and paste or drag and drop them.
Quoting:If you want to quote something someone posted, simply press the Quote link at the bottom of THEIR post. It automatically starts a reply post with the quote in there. Then you can edit out the text you don't want.
Also, if you want to quote an article, you can just use blockquote tags as follows: (Make sure to put this in the HTML entry window, not the Design View window:
<blockquote> QUOTE </blockquote>
Just replace the word QUOTE with the actual quote.
Skipping to last post of long threads:A few people don't know this. But if you are on the thread listing of any of these new forums, you can get to the last post of a thread easy. If you look in the last post column, and click on the DATE of the last post, it takes you to the last post.
Turning off Signatures: You can choose to have signatures not show up for you while you are viewing posts. This helps speed up your browsing experience. To do this, simply click on My Profile under My Menu. Once in there, click on Edit Profile. Once in the edit screen, scroll all the way to the bottom and you will see the check box to dissable signatures.
Turning on PMs:You can choose to or not to accept Private Messages. I would hope most people would turn these on. To do this, simply click on My Profile under My Menu. Once in there, click on Edit Profile. Once in the edit screen, scroll to nearly the bottom and just above the signature entry box, there is a check box to turn them on.
Changing the Board Appearance:One of the great things you can do with this software is decide how YOU want the board displayed and change it just for you. To do this, simply click on My Profile under My Menu. Once in there, click on Edit Profile. Once in the edit screen, scroll to nearly the bottom and use the two drop down menus to configure your view.
Finding Posts of Your Own: While waiting for email notifications and/or an icon to appear in front of the threads, if you go into your own profile, you will see the last 10 posts you have made, no matter which Scout.com board it was on. They are in chronological order with the newest on top. And unlike on EzBoard, this feature WORKS on these boards.
Inserting a Link to a Post: There are two ways to do this on the new boards:
1) Just paste the link directly in to the message. This has been fixed and now works, however, it does not automatically shorten the URL like EzBoard did.
2) Another way to do it is to you simply type the text you want to be the link in design view. Then you highlight it, and press this button on the posting control panel: When you press that button, a little pop up pops up and you put in the URL and select your target. (New Window, Same Window, etc.)
Previewing your Posts: Most people are used to the EzBoard method of this, which is to check the check box for it. On these boards, there is no check box. Just a button you press. The button is on the far right of the editing bar and it looks like this:
I Want To Die In My Sleep Like My Grandfather. Not Yelling And Screaming Like The Passengers In His Car.
Frequently Asked Questions for Forums Users (also try "Help" under My Menu):
Q: Will my username and post counts from the old boards be preserved? A: Yes. Click on your username to see your postcount total. Your total may lag ezboard by a few weeks, but we'll do a final "synch" once your site has cutover permanently to the new forums. Also, some users' totals are not yet correctly assigned to their "home" sites, causing low post counts displayed within posts, but this will be fixed.
Q: Will my avatar and other profile information be preserved? A: No, you will need to re-enter profile information.
Q: Where can I find old posts, are the old boards going to stay up? A: We are not able to move posts off ezboard to the new forums. The current ezboard forums will stay up in parallel for a short time while traffic is transitioned to the new software. We'll then apply permanent "redirects" to the old forums and you will not be able to access old forums and posts. The exact timing of these steps will be governed by beta feedback and may vary by site Skip to last post of long threads:If you look in the "last post" column, and click on the DATE of the last post, it takes you to the last post.
Use Images:In IE, simply copy and "paste" into your post. For other browsers, information on avatars, etc. click here: Image Tutorial
Turn off Signatures:You can choose to have signatures not show up for you while you are viewing posts. This helps speed up your browsing experience. To do this, simply click on My Profile under My Menu. Once in there, click on Edit Profile. Once in the edit screen, scroll all the way to the bottom and you will see the check box to disable signatures.
Turn on PMs:Private Messaging is off by default, although admins and moderators can always PM you. To enable receiving PMs from others, click on My Inbox under My Menu. On the upper left, click "Turn: On"
Change the Board Appearance:One of the great things you can do with this software is decide how YOU want the board displayed for you. Click on My Profile under My Menu. Once in there, click on Edit Profile. Once in the edit screen, scroll to the bottom and use the two drop down menus to configure your view.
See my Total Postcount and Find My Prior Posts:Click your username. You will see the total postcount across all boards, and also the last 10 posts you have made, no matter which Scout.com board it was on.
Insert a Link:This is relatively simple, but the process did change. Simply type the text you want to be the link in Design view. Then highlight it, and press this button on the posting control panel: Or, click the "HTML" tab and use straight HTML.
Preview my Posts:A big 'ol Preview button is coming in the next week or so.
Props to the folks at WarpathInsiders for the "how to's" above!
Q: How do I... (if not covered above)? A: We've built a Help system into the new forums which should answer most how-to questions. And if not, please let us know!
Q: I don't see any images or HTML at all on my site, just plain text, what's going on? A: Each site admin has the option of enabling or disabling HTML use on their site.
Q: Why don't you have feature x, y or z, which ezboard had? A: Our initial release will not have every possible message board feature, but we've tried to incorporate the most important basic features. You'll also discover many new features, including WYSIWYG text editing, My Forums, Post of the Day, super-fast pageloads via "AJAX" technology, a long-term "reputation" system, and ability to change your own preferred display format (thread, topic, or preview). We'll deploy many more features over time and expect to update frequently.
Q: Why are you moving off ezboard? A: The short answer is to achieve better integration, features, and reliability. We've long wanted to provide forums that are fully integrated and more consistent with the rest of Scout, both visually and functionally. We have a backlog of great feature ideas from Scout publishers and users which we want to get done. Finally, we believe we can operate our own software more cost-effectively and more reliably.
Re timing, we appreciate this is a busy time of year (it's our busiest too), but our ezboard contract is expiring, and they are moving in a different business direction which does not include support for the ezboard codebase.
Q: What browsers do you support? A: Supported Browser Matrix for Forums: * IE6/IE7 - full support included WYSIWYG editing * MSN Browser - limited support * Opera - full support, but no WYSIWYG editor (manual HTML tags supported) * Safari - full support, but no WYSIWYG editor (manual HTML tags supported) * Firefox - Mac and Windows - full support included WYSIWYG editing - image toolbar add-on is highly recommended for frequent posters * Palm/Treo/Blackberry/PDA browsers - very limited support, add-ons recommended, see beta board for tips
Q: Where do I post problems or bug reports? A: Under the "Featured Forums" heading in the right column, click Beta Bug Reports and follow the instructions there. Be sure to check the "Known Issues" post first!
Q: Why do you call them "forums" now? A: It has fewer letters than "message boards".
Q: Will we have to move off the existing ezboard forums? A: Yes, and site admins soon will be locking new posts on ezboard and "redirecting" the traffic onto the new forums. For now, we are running them in parallel so you can try the new forums, get used to them and give us feedback on what ought to be improved/changed/fixed. Thank you for visiting Scout.com!
I Want To Die In My Sleep Like My Grandfather. Not Yelling And Screaming Like The Passengers In His Car.
The topic view is under your profile. Go as far right as you can and click on my profile, when that opens, go to edit profile, there is where you will find how to change the way to view it. I am already gettingused to the new set up, I hope others are as well.
For the issue of not seeing who is on line...apparently this had been disabled through LOI day..they say that this happens every year. Well this is some of the busiest posting time of the year and I know this feature wasn't disabled last year.
CI, you might want try to google the message board. I've done that before and it's actually brought up posts, but that was on the old board. I don't know if the new boards posts have been archived on google yet. P.S. I've done that by googling the posters username and it brings there posts up.
Simple quit moving posts. Once they are moved they die a quick death. The formula here is when a post become scontroversial they move it once it gets a lot of reads and posts. that is dumb. This board needs contriversy!
