Aggie Football Has Three Named Preseason All-WAC

Three members of the New Mexico State football team were named Preseason All-WAC by collegefootballnews.com. Offensive lineman Nick Cole, linebacker Jimmy Cottrell and defensive back Matt Griebel all received second team honors

"We have 17 great seniors on this team and since day one they have done everything we have asked of them", head coach Hal Mumme said. "These three players epitomize what great leaders are and this is a great honor for them."

Cottrell (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County HS), who will start at middle linebacker this season, was also named the 17th best player in the conference by the news organization. This is the third preseason honor for Cottrell who was also named to both the 2005 Lombardi and Bronco Nagurski Watch Lists earlier this spring. Last season, Cottrell earned first team All-Sun Belt honors after leading the Aggies in tackles (99) for the third straight season.

Griebel (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro HS) enters this fall expected to start at free safety for the Aggies. Last season, Griebel was named second team All-Sun Belt and finished second on the team in tackles with 91. In a win over Troy (9/17) last season, Griebel registered a career-high 15 tackles and scored his first career touchdown with a 64-yard interception return against Florida International.

Cole (Lawton, Okla./Eisenhower HS), who has made 28 consecutive starts for the Aggies entering the 2005 season, is expected to start at the guard spot this year and could be the first ever all-conference pick on the Aggies' offensive line. Last year, Cole started all 11 games and helped the Aggies finish 34th in the nation in passing offense (243 yards per game) and 58th in the country in total offense (372 yards per game).

The Aggie football team will kickoff its first season in the Western Athletic Conference Sept. 3 against I-10 rival UTEP in Las Cruces. The game, which will be broadcast live on ESPNU, is schedule to begin at 8:30 p.m.
