Aggie Basketball Gets #5 Seed

It is set...the New Mexico State men's basketball team will enter its first Western Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed next Thursday in Reno, Nev. at the Lawlor Events Center as the Aggies take on the fourth-seeded Rainbow Warriors

awai'i, which fell into the fourth seed after a 51-48 loss to Louisiana Tech on senior night in Honolulu Saturday, will enter the conference tournament with an overall record of 17-10 and a 10-6 mark in league play. The Warriors, who led 36-25 at halftime Saturday night, were outscored 26-12 by the Bulldogs in the second half.

The Aggies, who had their season-best six-game win streak snapped Thursday night in the regular season finale at Hawai'i, enter the tournament 15-13 and 10-6 in the WAC. New Mexico State split the two regular season meetings with Hawai'i this year, earning an 87-84 victory over the Rainbow Warriors at the Pan American Center Jan. 14.

Both meetings this season between the Aggies and ‘Bows were showcases for the club's marquee players as red shirt sophomore Tyrone Nelson (Hempstead, Texas) and senior Julian Sensley of Hawai'i led the way in both contests. In the two meetings, Nelson averaged 22 points and 9.5 rebounds, including a double-double (28 points, 11 rebounds) in the first game of the season series. Sensley, who was the game's leading scorer in both games, averaged 27 points and seven rebounds. Last Thursday, Sensley led the ‘Bows to the victory with 22 points and nine rebounds.

One big difference between the first meeting of the season and last Thursday for the Aggies was the absence of red shirt junior Elijah Ingram (East Orange, N.J.), who did not play in Honolulu due to a hamstring injury. Ingram, who is averaging 13.3 points per game this season, had 21 points and four assists in the Aggies' win over the Warriors Jan. 14. Ingram is recovering quickly and is expected to be ready for the opening round of the WAC Tournament.

The remainder of the first round games has the No. 1 seed Nevada facing the eighth seed Idaho in the 6:00 p.m. (PT) game while the No. 3 seed Louisiana Tech faces sixth-seeded Boise State in the 12:00 p.m. (PT) game and the No. 2 seed Utah State faces the No. 7 seed San Jose State in the 2:30 p.m. (PT) game.

The Aggies' quarterfinal game with Hawai'i can be followed live over the airwaves on KGRT 103.9 FM with the "Voice of the Aggies" Jack Nixon calling all the high-flying hoops action. The game will also feature live audio, live video and live stats via the web at www.nmstatesports.com. The New Mexico State Athletics Department will be holding a pep rally at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday in the north parking lot of the Pan American Center to send the Aggies off to Reno in style. 2006 WAC Men's Basketball Tournament – First Round
