New Mexico Stars: DeAndre Wright

All week long the talk was Terrell Owens of the Allen (TX) Wranglers was coming to Rio Rancho to play the New Mexico Stars of the IFL. But it was former New Mexico Lobo DeAndre Wright who brought the popcorn.

The New Mexico Stars played their second game in the Rio Rancho Star Center today and if you haven't been to an Indoor football game you are missing out. The action is different than the 100-yard variety as it is much faster and really more violent. The connection for us here at The Red Menace is a host of former Lobo football players on the Stars roster OL Ivan Hernandez, WR Roland Bruno, DL Wesley Beck, LB Tray Hardaway, RB DonTrell Moore, and Red Menace Fan Appreciation Award Winner DeAndre Wright.

And while most people's eyes were on #81 of the Allen Wranglers, those of us part of The Red Menace had our eye on our guy D-Wright as he drew the challenge of covering Owens. After the game we caught up DeAndre to talk about the game.

DeAndre Wright talking about today's game!

Many people including myself thought Owens might mail it in during the game, but to his credit Owens played the entire game and took his fair share of hits. Owens played all four quarters and DeAndre Wright was right there with him.

Here is some video of Owens going up and over the wall early in the game.

I don't care how great of a DB you are, a wide receiver will score on you and in the 2nd half that is exactly what Owens did as he hauled in a one handed score. DeAndre gave him a little bit of the business bodying #81 into the wall and Owens took exception as he gave D-Wright a little shove eliciting the boos and hisses of the sellout crowd. "I just wanted to let him know I was here," said Wright about the incident.

After that Owens touchdown Terrell had a very quiet night hauling 4 other passes for 25 yards, and it wasn't for lack of trying as Wrangler QB Bryan Randall went to Owens quite a few times but Wright was up to the task including a spectacular broken up pass in the 4th quarter as Randall went with the same play Owens scored with earlier. However, Wright was in great position, took Owens to the wall and knocked it out of his hands for he incomplete. Wright said, "(Owens) Tough task he had one little catch on me that was it."

The next Stars home game will be Friday April 6th in the Star Center in Rio Rancho, make plans now as it is a good time, with some fun football being played! We are still trying to get a Red Menace type section started with the Stars if you are interested let us know.
