Eye On Recruiting: Pancake

TheRedMenace.com was given a tip via Twitter that Cleveland Thomas of Scotlandville Magnet HS (Baton Rouge LA) was taking a trip to the University of New Mexico this coming week so TRM contacted Cleveland Thomas for confirmation.

"Yes, I will be visiting this Monday, "says a chuckling Cleveland.

So what is funny you may ask? "Everyone just calls me ‘Pancake'," says Thomas. Okay Pancake, I have to ask how did you get that nickname?"My grandma gave it to me when I was like 2 or 3 months old," says Pancake. "I forgot the whole story but it had something to do with my stomach."

So you telling me nobody calls you by your first or last name?  "No, the name stuck and I'm just Pancake," says Thomas.

Well ‘just Pancake' is saying something as Pancake Thomas as a senior led the Scotlandville Hornets to a Louisiana state title averaging 18 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists per game.

So when Pancake says, "I score real well and taking the defender off the dribble," he isn't just talking.

With similar numbers his junior year Pancake signed with Louisiana-Lafayette. Since that team Thomas asked for and was granted his release from the Ragin Cajun program and his recruiting opened up once again.

"Yes I signed in the early signing period and afterwards things didn't work out I asked for and was granted my release," says Pancake. "And I am eligible to play right away."

Pancake did you see recruiting slow down after signing and then getting released from Louisiana-Lafayette? "No," responds Pancake. "After I got my release even more schools got involved with me."

One of the schools involved in recruiting Thomas is the University of New Mexico. "Coach (Craig) Neal is the coach recruiting me to New Mexico," says Thomas. "Not sure when they (UNM) got involved as early on it was Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane, Murray State, Southern, and UTEP looking at me."

"After getting my release other schools have jumped in," says Pancake. "New Mexico, Cal-St. Northridge, Tulsa, UTEP, and Nebraska have all offered. I visited Cal-St. Northridge so far, and I've got New Mexico on Monday and then Tulsa."

With all the schools that have offered and you being through this process before do you have a timetable set as to when you plan on committing and/or signing?

"Whenever I feel comfortable at a school I've visited I will commit," responds Pancake. "I want to play for a school where I can come in and make an impact and where it is like a family.

TheRedMenace.com would like to thank Pancake Thomas for his time, "I was watching the Laker game so glad they won, I'm a big Laker fan" So for this interview since it was after midnight when I called we give the assist to the Black Mamba.
