2005 Night of Champions

Enjoy the pictures and videos of the 2005 Night of Champions weightlifting competition!

The 14th annual Night of Champions was held at the Tow Diehm facility tonight and it went off very nicely. I wish I could gauge how many people were there but I'm really terrible at that so I'm going to say… 500?  It was great to meet Sedillo Hill Lobo and other Lobo fans that came up and said hello. We appreciate all the kind words and encouragement and yes, The Red Menace and TheRedMenace.com will be here for many years to come. Our first T-Shirts said it best, "Red Menace… The Tradition Begins"

So as tradition dictates and yes, Night of Champions is a tradition the teams were set up into two teams ironically named the Cherry Team and the Silver Team and they were broken down into 4 categories: bench press, incline, squats, and power cleans. The teams compete for the coveted Beefmaster Trophy, which will be given after spring break this year.

**Denotes Position Record

As many of you know the Night of Champions is just a culmination and celebration ending the winter work out period. The team has been lifting on their own and with teammates since they got back from the Emerald Bowl nearly every day. Some of the lifting periods are voluntary which means the whole team volunteers to go. That being said, there were other records broken prior to tonight's event and I want to make sure and mention them.

Major Mosely breaks 2 records!

WR- Major Mosely now owns the Wide Receiver incline record with a 320lb lift.

LB- Quincy Black now owns the Linebacker Vertical Jump Record with a jump of 42

RB- Martelius Epps now owns the Running Back Vertical Jump Record with a jump of 43.5

K- Kenny Byrd now owns the Kicker vertical jump record with a jump of 37.5

As Coach Paulsen mentioned tonight and earlier this week when we talked to him these records are really starting to climb and picking them up isn't that easy so let's congratulate this season's record breakers.

TheRedMenace.com had a chance to speak to QB Kole McKamey about his record-breaking evening.

Kole congratulations on your record-breaking evening…

KM: You know. I came into the off-season wanting to work really hard on my legs and before tonight I hadn't really thought of 300lbs and to go up 23 more then that and break the record surprises me as much as it did anybody else.

I don't think people realize how much work you guys put in during the off-season. How much have you guys been working since the end of last season?

We lift Monday-Friday and it is a ‘hard lift.' It's a 110% very intense workout. It isn't just coming in stretching out and lift a little bit. It is the maximum lift everyday! It takes a lot of focus and hard work, plus it helps you to stay healthy through the off-season. It is a very tough program but it also produces numbers like tonight.

You also do some work outside don't you?

Yes… We do a lot of running outside as well.

Kole as the starting quarterback and one of the leaders of this team, what do you do to motivate your teammates, or do they need motivation?

I think everybody needs motivation, it doesn't matter what kind of person you are. For me I've always been a very vocal person, but I've also learned to be a good leader by not saying anything and just work my tail off. It shows my other teammates that if ‘he can work his butt off like that, I can work my butt of like that. If he plays that hard on Saturday then I can play that hard on Saturday.'

Thanks Kole, we will see you in a couple of weeks for Spring Ball.

Yes Sir… I can't wait!

As we move on I want to apologize for the quality of some of our pictures as the lighting is kind of low inside "The Tow" and since these guys are lifting huge amounts of weight I didn't want to use a flash to distract them. I also wasn't able to get a good angle for the incline and bench press part of the competition as we were packed into the Tow pretty tight so there isn't any pictures of the bench and incline participants. I apologize.

Here are some videos and pictures of tonight's Night of Champions event. I hope you enjoy them and make plans for the 2006 Night of Champions Event.

A definite fan favorite 145lb Kicker John Sullivan Power Cleans 240 pounds!

Hitmen Robert Turner

FB Adrian Byrd prior to a lift says, 'Why did it get so quiet all of a sudden?'

Cody Kase one of the 40 Lobos that can 'Clean over 300lbs.'

As you can see from Quincy Black's picture here all the players have different ways to motivate for the next lift.

You see the serene Quincy Black. Click here to see Quincy at work!

Check out the Afro on Herbert Felder! You know how much The Red Menace people dig the AFRO!

Kole Breaks a Record!

Careful Adrian!

Cody makes a "Kase" for Beefmaster. That's Cheesy really.

Let's try Kase makes it look easy!

(Sorry Cody I couldn't resist the cheesy newspaper headline)

A couple of players missing from this year's Night of Champions were SR Wide Receiver Hank Baskett. "I'm still recovering from my groin pull and getting ready for Spring Ball," said Baskett. "So I wasn't able to compete this year." Also missing was senior running back DonTrell Moore who is recovering and rehabbing from knee surgery. TheRedMenace.com had a chance to speak with DonTrell

I have to relate to you all before I write the interview that DonTrell Moore is known as one of the funniest guys on the team. The guy makes everyone laugh with his infectious smile and humor. Tonight DonTrell got over on me. DonTrell was watching American Idol on the tube after NOC and I walked up and asked if I could speak to him for a minute. With a straight face he said, "No I don't feel like talking right now." That was my first time any Lobo football player had ever told me no, and I know DonTrell is a big fan of The Red Menace so my jaw must have dropped to me knees, because DonTrell started laughing saying, "I'm kidding man get over here."

You got me Moore! You got me!

How is your rehab going right now DonTrell? How you feeling?

It is going well. I'm working really hard and I'm working out twice a day right now.

I notice you have a support on right now do you wear a brace all the time?

Yeah it has only been like three weeks so I have to wear a brace. Its not a big brace, just a small one to help control any swelling and keep it stable.

How you feeling emotionally and mentally after the surgery?

I'm fine…I've been able to be mentally strong throughout the operation both before and after. That is what has helped me get through this and will help me get on the field is being mentally tough.

DonTrell I'm sure I don't have to tell you this but you know how much your coaches, teammates, and fans at TheRedMenace.com are behind you, wishing you the best, and praying for you.

Oh yeah… that is the biggest thing that has helped me get through this. The support of my teammates, my family and friends, my coaches and fans and that is what will help me get back out on the field.

Night of Champions not only brought out the current Lobo team, but I noticed that future Lobos Phillip Harrison and Eric Cook were in attendance as was former Lobo player Nick Speegle. I was able to catch up to Nick and see what he was doing to prepare himself to play at the next level.

Nick what have you been doing since the season is over?

#89 Nick Speegle with #33 Fola Fashola

I've been coming in here everyday (The Tow) after the all-star game and working out with Fola (Fashola) and Brandon (Payne).

Have you heard anything from any teams or your agent?

I don't know… We're just going to see. I've heard maybe late rounds or free agent might be where I'll sign, and that's fine.

How hard was it to see these guys lifting out there and you not be a part of it?

Aww man…a piece of my heart was out there man. Seriously though I love it! Everyone moves but it is great to see these guys growing but it was a little sad.

Well of course its bittersweet, you are a big part of building this program to what it is today.

I can still remember when I was a freshman out there and now I look out at the freshman that are out there now… time just flew by.

It flew by for us as well Nick… Good luck to you Nick. Nothing would make Red Menace fans happier to see #89 blasting QB's and RB's in the League.

Congratulations to all in attendance and the competitors in tonight's competition. Stay tuned to TheRedMenace.com later this month when UNM announces who wins the coveted Beefmaster Trophy. Also stay tuned as later this month TheRedMenace.com will be covering Lobo Spring Football like never before.
