First up some info about the Cherry-Silver game. It will be held at 4 PM, Saturday, April 23rd. The game itself will be on the practice fields.
When I first heard of the game being played on the practice field I was disappointed, but after hearing Rocky Long explain that with only nine offensive lineman the game will be more of a scrimmage than anything.
On to the practice.
Again, an amazingly fast-paced practice - moved along very quickly.
The session had begun when I arrived. The Lobos were in 7-on-7 drill.
RB Daniel Ramirez broke free down the sideline and scored, showing his under-rated speed. Ramirez has looked good during the spring and should play a big part in this year's team. A player, I couldn't tell who, yelled "nice run Danny" from the "Injury Corral".
Then is was on to 1–on–1 drills, as the QB's tried to hook up with the WR's while being guarded by a D-back. "Big Bank Hank" Baskett made a beautiful grab with a defender draped all over him.
Back to a fast-paced 7-on-7 drill.
TE Chris Mark made a couple of tough catches in traffic, over the middle.
Jamar Hall made a fabulous interception down the right sideline that Coach Long complimented Hall on after practice while Jamar was speaking to a reporter.
Full scrimmage next up. RB Paul Baker, playing with the first team, looked good bulling his way through the line for about 12 tough yards. Adrian Byrd heard some grief from RB Coach Cornell Jackson for running out of bounds on one carry. Jackson's presence is "felt", once again.
Kole McKamey looked pretty sharp.
Drive ended with a blocked field goal attempt.
Bad news during this session of practice. CB Gabe Fullbright got tangled up with WR Marcus Smith and hurt his leg. No official word from UNM on his status.
More drills next.
Tackling drills for defense and o-lineman, (Yep, Tackling for o-lineman). Technique drills, for QB's and WR's.
Next up: Long yelling out to all "You guys ready for two-minute drills?"
First drive. Marcus Smith bobbles and drops a couple of passes. His frustration shows as he pounds the ground with his fist after the 2nd drop. Smith got off to a good start this spring but has struggled, lately. He'll be fine. Marcus is a star in the making.
WR Anthony Carter makes a nice grab on a pass from McKamey but the drive stalls on downs.
Long yells out again, ": 55 seconds left, down by three!"
Chris Nelson takes over at QB. Lobos move the ball, Big Bank with another nice grab. Bryd pounds one up the gut for about 15 yards on a draw. Field goal attempt by PK Garth Archibald, JR-RS, from about 35 to 40 yards is good. Nice kick.
"Overtime, overtime", Long yells.
Kole back in at QB. Baker takes one around right end and runs for about 20 yards. To me, Baker's stock is on the rise! Look out for this guy. Wearing the red number 21 jersey, I see ghosts of the great Terry Metcalf, of the Cardinals.
Bad snap in a shotgun formation sails over McKamey's head and brings the wrath of offensive coordinator Dan Dodd on center Ryan Cook. Cookie looks even meaner than normal. A QB draw is stuffed. Archibald boots another field goal, this one from about 35 yards.
Nelson's turn, again.
First play Nelson lobs one to the goal line to Carter, Mike Powdrell defends and is called for pass interference. Next play from about the seven-yard line, Nelson slices through the defense and scores a touchdown. Very nice run, Nelson is pretty quick on his feet.
PK Kenny Bryd booted the PAT.
With that, the team broke up into groups for a little chat with each position coach and practice was over.
I know Lee Roy likes to give out the game balls at the end of each practice. He's my attempt.
Offense: Paul Baker. I just keep seeing him make plays…
Defense: #10 Juamar Hall for that fab pick…
Special teams: C' mon, it's all about Archie!
