NMVarsity: Brett Kennedy

NM Varsity would like to introduce you to La Cueva High School's latest defensive standout Brett Kennedy.

If you know anything about high school football in New Mexico, you certainly know how dominating of a defense the La Cueva high school football team has had the past couple of years.  I'm sure you have heard of Aaron Lewis, who is headed to Texas and Frankie Baca headed to UNM to play college football. Well the New Mexico Varsity staff wants you to meet current Bear defensive standout Brett Kennedy. Brett started as a sophomore for La Cueva this past season and has made a name for himself.  In fact the sophomore standout not only competed, he dominated opponents at times. But, don't take our word on how good Brett is… ask the rest of the Class 5A coaches who voted Brett 2nd team all state at Defensive Tackle. He accomplished something in his sophomore year that senior's all over the state would love to have done. This polite and focused young man talked to New Mexico Varsity and this is what he had to say:

NM Varsity- Brett how tall are you, what do you weigh and what is your 40 time?

Brett- Right now I am 6'2 250 and I run a 5.2 40.

NM Varsity- What have you been up to and what are your summer plans?

Brett- I have been lifting pretty hard and in about a week we are going to start our summer workouts.

NM Varsity- How much are you lifting these days Brett?

Brett- Last Friday I maxed out at 315 on bench press and 405 on squat.

NM Varsity- That's impressive! So…. Brett what would you say is the strongest part of your game and what is the thing you need to work on most?

Brett- I think my ability to out power my opponents is my best quality; so I guess my strength would be my biggest thing." Brett continued, "The thing I need to work on most is my technique"

NM Varsity- So Brett, I know its way early to talk college choices but do you have a "dream school" you would want to play for after your high school career is over?

Brett- Southern California and Penn State are my dream schools!

NM Varsity- Any reason why?

Brett- Well, a while back I went to a camp at USC and their d-line coach is a great guy and coach, he really impressed me! And Penn State has one of the best coaches in college football! I really like and respect both of those schools a lot!

New Mexico Varsity- Thanks for the time Brett!

Brett Kennedy is definitely a young man to keep an eye on, and he has a lot to offer for his future college team. He has size, quickness, power, a good work ethic… and he still has two years of high school to get better.
