2005 UNM "mini-camp"

UNM held a "mini-camp" for 2006 local high school seniors and we were lucky enough to be out there with video camera at the ready.

Thursday June 9th is the first day of Rocky Long's football camp and 7-on-7 tournament. The camp and tournament are open to all football players and teams in the area and Rocky said they have over 500 participants registered for this year's regular camp. Today UNM hosted roughly thirty-five local 05-06 seniors from across the state. These young men are given the opportunity to be weighed, measured, timed, and evaluated by the Lobo coaching staff. Each of these young men hopes to catch the eye of Coach Long and his staff to earn a scholarship or an opportunity to walk-on at UNM.

I've been to a couple oNFL Pro-days here at UNM and today's mini-camp was run in that same fashion, as the participants were weighed, measured, ran the 40 yard dash, vertical leap, shuttle runs, and each of UNM's position coaches worked drills with each participant in today's camp.

"There is no money involved here," said Coach Long. "The NCAA allows us a day to bring in local seniors from across the state. We get the chance to run them and put them through drills."

Unfortunately, Rocky and the staff aren't allowed to talk to media about individual players so I don't have any individual numbers. What we do have is our totally uneducated list of local players that we spoke with from today's camp that we feel are D-I talented players. For the next few days we will have interviews, photos, and videos of the following players:

CB/RB Jerrell Miller Highland High School

RB/CB Michael Love Rio Rancho High School

RB/LB Jered Metzger Manzano High School

QB Baer Philipbar Rio Rancho

The following young men were at today's camp, unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to speak to them. However, if you click on their names NM Varsity has spoken with their coaches and we hope to catch them next week during the Rocky Long football camp.

WR Nicky Lawson Manzano High School

DE Bayard Roberts St. Pius X

At this point in his career as the head football coach here at UNM there can't be any doubt that one of Rocky Long's goals as the coach at UNM is to recruit every D-I caliber player from the 505. Today's mini-camp is just another example of Rocky's dedication to football players from New Mexico. If you still question Rocky Long's positive attitude towards the local players, check out next week's football camp when all young men and women from around the area have their opportunity to catch the coaching staff's eye.
