Lobo Football Camp News: Local Receiver Offered

UNM make Roy Hackey an offer they hope can't refuse.

While covering this weekend's Rocky Long football camp the past two weekend TheRedMenace.com staff was able to catch up with some pretty nice players within and from around the state of New Mexico.  Last week we broke the stories that UNM had offered Michael Love of Rio Rancho, Jerrell Miller of Highland, and Nicholas Lawson of Manzano scholarships to play for UNM. We would like to let all our readers know that Rocky Long has offered another player from the 505 a scholarship to play for the University of New Mexico. That young man…

Roy Hackey 6'-1" 190 WR/S from Hatch Valley HS (Hatch NM)

For those of you unfamiliar with the Hatch Valley Bears they have re-written the record book when it comes to throwing the ball… "We are a pass first, pass second, run third offense at Hatch," said Hackey…  and the numbers don't lie. When you think of Hatch most people recall now former Hatch Valley Bear QB Brett Henson as he shattered passing records in his junior and senior years at Hatch.  Henson along with some pretty good receivers- Roy Hackey, seniors Ryan Franzoy and Alex Alaniz led the Bears to back-to-back state championships.

Today during 7-on-7 games was the first day I had the opportunity to zero in on Hackey who is playing with a "renegade" team, (some high schools field one or two squads. Renegade teams are put together from players from different schools and states) and he did not disappoint as I watched Roy score on 3 spectacular catches… The first was a diving reception into the end zone, followed by these two on video…

Hackey jumps up and snares a TD!

Hackey jumps for another one! Okay so he is out of bounds, but still a nice move

Over the shoulder and into the endzone!

After watching these videos I came home and checked out Hackey's stats last season and I would have to say they are as impressive as watching him live. 47 receptions for 1,023-yards, and 13 touchdowns! Toss in 3 more touchdowns that Roy picked up while playing safety and you can see why the Lobo coaches were looking at him...

After one of today's games I caught up with Mr. Hackey and asked him about his football playing future…

"I'll be a wide receiver in college. I'm a playmaker in high school and will hopefully do the same thing in college," says Hackey.

When asked what he felt his strengths were as a wide receiver Hackey said:

"To run over the middle and catch balls in traffic." So you're not afraid to take a hit? "No, not at all…"

Roy which schools are currently recruiting you? (I asked this earlier in the morning.)

UNM,  NMSU, Texas Tech, and Army are all showing some interest in me.

When asked if he had a favorite Hackey said…

"I'd love to play at UNM. It's near home. I would love to play here… I always have wanted to play here… Other then them, I have no favorite… UNM is right up there."

Roy may get his opportunity to play for the Lobos as his mother informed TheRedMenace.com later Saturday evening that Roy Hackey has been offered a scholarship to play for UNM and Rocky Long.
