As UNM's football camp drew to a close last weekend a young man from the Dallas area dropped by to check out the Lobo football camp. During the awards ceremony as camp was coming to a close Ranchview's Peter Persinger and his father sat next to me and spoke about Peter's future.
I first spoke with Peter's father who was astonished at the growth of Albuquerque and surrounding areas. "Peter's mother and I are from Portales and its great to see how much things have grown around here," said the elder Persinger. "The day is beautiful just like I remember. Peter has been bouncing around the country and we came down to take a look at UNM."
"I've been to the football camps at Oklahoma St. and SMU this year," said Pete Persinger. "Unfortunately, I couldn't make this one as I had to take my ACT's on Saturday."
So how did the test go Peter? "Not a problem," said Persinger. I found out later that Peter is not only a talented football player, but a very good student as well as he is on the honor roll at Ranchview.
At that moment Taos HS Zayn Bin-Bilal was named as one of the top offensive linemen during the camp and Peter and his father knew immediately that he was one of the Lobos targets. "Look at that guys size," said the younger Persinger. "I guarantee they are recruiting him."
Persinger said he was able to catch some of the 7-on-7 competition and asked him what he thought the differences were between the camp in Oklahoma and the one here in New Mexico. "The speed of the game is the difference," responded Peter. "When I was at the Oklahoma St. camp there were 20 players my size and my speed."
So you start on both sides of the ball, what position do you expect to play in college? "I will be playing linebacker in college," said Persinger. "I like the intensity and speed of the position and that is where I think I will play."
Which schools are currently recruiting you Peter?
Do you have any favorites at this point?
At this point not really… maybe Oklahoma St.
We will keep an eye this season on Peter Persinger at Ranchview and hopefully get an interview with his coach Bill Persinger… as the high school football season rolls along.
