Training Camp 2005

1st day of training camp is in the books for the 2005 University of New Mexico Lobos.

The biggest question in everyone's mind today was… HOW'S DONTRELL? Everyone wanted to see #22 out on the field and they were not disappointed. The whole team was in shorts and helmets today including DonTrell wearing a blue jersey (non-contact) that didn't mean their wasn't contact as there is no way to avoid aggressive human beings that large and quick from smacking each other.

All winter, spring, and summer the question has been, how is DonTrell? Will DonTrell do it? Can he do it? I'm sure he is tired of answering that question. Today DonTrell was practicing with the 1st and 2nd team offense and to be honest with you he looked like the DonTrell of old as he hits the hole, follows his blockers, cuts, and while he was wearing the blue jersey I noticed on every single one of his runs he wanted some contact. DonTrell has proved everyone wrong thus far and I'm sure he has heard the folks saying wait till he takes a hit… Today DonTrell wasn't looking to avoid collision… he was looking for it!

With DonTrell being back Rocky has said that they might not spread the ball around as much. Right…. Kole Mc Kamey looks to be in complete control with Chris Nelson, Bryan Clampitt, and Steve Harris competing for backup roles. There is a newcomer at QB as well that is learning quickly what is expected out of him in practice. Donovan Portiere displayed a nice and it will be interesting to see this young man grow into a starting QB.

Kole to Hank for the Touchdown!

The wide receiver corps looks stronger than ever as the big question is who will play opposite of Hank Baskett. Marcus Smith dropped a couple of passes causing him to do something that reminded me of last year. He started banging the ball on his helmet, getting himself frustrated, and dropping more. Unlike last year where practice would be over for him, he did his pushups for dropping the passes, received some reassurance from his teammates, and went out and started making some plays. Travis Brown made a spectacular reception laying out for a pass; unfortunately he nicked himself up and was done for the day. John Mulchrone and Logan Hall also had productive days as Hall made a nice move to the end zone as Kole was rolling to his right, he lobbed the ball right into Hall's hands for the TD!

It is odd to talk so much about the offense when it comes to Lobo football as defense usually rules in the Land of Enchantment, but the offense looks hot. Defensive bright spots as once again there was very little contact… A sweet bull rush by #60 Billy Brittain that resulted in a QB sack and #7 Charles Brown picking up and returning a bad snap for a touchdown.

The CB position looks pretty solid as Gabe Fulbright and Jerrell Malone, and Juamar Hall as starters, but there was a newcomer running with the 2nd team defense. Highland HS grad 6-0 187 true freshman Ian Clark was holding his own against some pretty good players.

Offensive Player of Practice

                                                             Brooks scores a Touchdown!

Jonathan Brooks- The unheralded WR drew some reviews from his teammates, as he was able to get behind Gabe Fulbright and jump up and snare a big gainer during 7 on 7's. Brooks followed that up with a nice twisting touchdown reception that you can see right here on video!

Defensive Player of Practice

#10 Juamar Hall – Hall is going to be a force to be reckoned with as the starting 3rd corner and today he showed that the spring practice session was no fluke.

505 Pride

#22 DonTrell Moore Just getting out on the field for someone that had DonTrell's surgery is saying something, but to take on conventional wisdom and the doubters and stare them in the eye and prove them wrong! This is a young man that every player and person can look up to with pride. He is a New Mexico guy and boy are we proud of this guy!

Get your ticket orders today

You have about 2 weeks to get your ticket orders in to be part of The Red Menace. Yes, the guys/gals that other teams dread coming to play. I spoke with Mr. Van Tate of Channel 13 and he said that The Red Menace was on the mouths of many of the Lobo opponents lips during media day talking about how they loathe and despise playing in front of The Red Menace! Now is your chance to help grow that tradition.
