Last night marked a 2nd round WNIT game vs. the California Golden Bears. Cal is a very impressive team, but they are very young with 3 freshmen in their starting line up and another High School All-American on the bench too.
The game started really slow. With only 6 combined points in the first 5 minutes, the teams had trouble getting started, with good D on both sides. The only time the Lobos were down in the game was a 4 to 2 Cal lead. The Lobos lead for the rest of the game. The Lobos then hit two 3's (Letz, Montgomery) to get the game rolling and the Lobos on top, a lead they never relinquished
The Bears kept the Lobo lead under 10 most of the first half, but the Lobos hit 2 late shots in the half to go up by 11, halftime score 30 to 19 as UNM stole the 1st half once again.
The second half starting like the first very slow the Lobos only had one point in the first 6 minutes of the half. Coach Flanagan after the game said, "We normal score in the second half. I hate to see the other team get a run, they did not score to many them selves (Cal) and that saved us, it looked to me that were hesitant." Cal was able to cut the lead to 6, but after that the Lobos went on a 9 to 2 run to push the leads to 15. The second half was a story of runs following the Lobos run the Bears went on one last push to cut the lead to 7, but the crowed got into it and I believe it got to Cal. The Lobos went on for a nice win over a good Cal team: Final score 55 to 46 UNM.
Tough night for Dionne
The Lobos had their first real test in this year, with the Golden Bears shutting down Dionne Marsh holding her to 0 for 11 from the field and only 1 point on the game. So, the Lobos had to find scoring in other places. Lezt, Montgomery, and Frances came up big with 11 points each to take up the slack. It was nice to see some of the ladies stepping up and scoring when some other player are down. Coach Flanagan said about the scoring tonight… "I am happy about that cause we were known as a one player team and it is obvious that we are not. We can win and beat a good opponent with out Dionne having a great offensive game".
Angela Hartill had another solid game for the Lobos going 4 for 4 from the field and scoring eight points. She really looks like a solid player that will be really good for the program. Coach Flanagan has some thoughts on Angela, "I always like her, she is real physical, she got to learn to meet the ball a little better, you know what I like about her she can take some elbows and get right back up, she is going to be good for us."
Next up for our lobos is a meeting with the 25th ranked Sooners of Oklahoma, Because of the great fans of UNM the WNIT has granted the lobos with the home game. It will happen on Wednesday at 7 pm. We will see you at the game. "PACK THE PIT"
