Lobos Bid Farewell To The Pit Faithful

Lobo fans watch 3 of the most winningest ladies in Lobo basketball history say good bye.

It was a bitter sweet game for three Lobo seniors Jana Francis, Abbie Letz, and Judy Vogt bid farewell to the Lobo faithful Saturday afternoon. However, this afternoon not one of the seniors stepped up for the Lobos as senior to be Julie Briody stole the show finishing the game with 16 points and also led the Lobos in rebounds as well with 8.

The game was no different then most Lobo games this year as the ladies started slowly and cold and BYU started hot going 6 for 6 from the field to start the game. BYU   was up by a fifteen to five margin when Abbie Letz took over. It was Abbie, Abbie and more Abbie as the senior refused to lose leading the Lobos on a 7 to 0 run. Okay really it was Abbie that went on a 7 to 0 run with a pair of lay ups and a bomb from downtown to bring the Lobos to within three. That was the end of Abbie's points for the game but they were some of the most important points in this game.

After being down 10 points early in the 1st half, the Lobos went on a 35 to 9 run to close out the early session. Amazingly, after the slow start that Lobo fans have become accustom to the Lobos were on fire at one point in the first half UNM was 7 for 7 from 3-point range ending the half 40 to 24.

In the second half the Lobos continued to play well, not letting BYU get with in anymore then 12 points the rest of the way. With a good defensive effort and great shooting by the Lobos rolled to a 74 to 49 win.  The Lobos have won 35 consecutive MWC home games, this years seniors class has never lossed a MWC home game, Great job Ladies.

After the game Coach Flanagan had some great things to say about this year's seniors, "They are three of the nicest players I've ever coached. They are all excellent students that have made a commitment to the community, which makes them fan favorites. They've been very successful over their careers as far as wins are concerned. They are model citizens with no behavior problems and of all three of them I never remember saying one thing to them about a behavior problem. I'm not sure you could get three better players. They are just great role models."

I have some final thoughts I would like to say about this year's senior class:

Jana Frances- What a way for a player to jump in her senior year a fill a hole left by the graduation of Lindsey Arndt, She just didn't fill it she took it over with great post moves on offense and holding her own when playing tough players and bigger players from other schools. Thank you for all you have done for the Lobos in the years and I personally want to thank for what you have done on and off the court for the UNM fans and program.

Judy Vogt- What a blessing to have you be a Lobo. Judy has become a great defender, when you see her on the court she is usually guarding the opposing teams best player. Which is no small chore. Thank you for coming to UNM and being a shut down defender.

Abbie Letz- You cannot say enough about this lady. Abbie has been doing it all for the Lobos this year from shooting the threes to becoming one of the best post defenders on the team this year. Injury after injury this year never seemed to slow her down ever and just when you thought she might not have much left she would break out for 20 or more points. Thank you for your hard work on every inch of that court and thank you for having the heart and desire to push through the injuries when other players may not have.
