With the season upon us the Lobo's took the court for the first time in
the Lobo Howl.
Let's take a brief look at the traditional alumni game. This alumni game was star struck with big time ex-Lobo players such as Jordan Adams who hasn't lost her touch inside and Chelsea Grear who hasn't lost her skills and still can do anything she wants to on the court. It was nice to see the ladies come back from all eras still supporting the Lobo program.
After the alumni game there was a fabulous three point contest. Anybody could have guessed who was going to win this one. Katie Montgomery showed us she still has the deadly three-point range. Even after three rounds she still sank twenty-two threes in a minute, but Brandi Kimble came awful close with sixteen made threes in the final.
Athletic: is what our team has not had
for many years. It is what has killed them in the NCAA vs. Baylor the lack
of being able to run up and down the court used to hurt our ladies, but not this
year. This year's team has speed, athletic abilities, and strong shooting
from everywhere on the court. Amy Beggin the freshmen phenom from
Minnesota showed us tonight that with her speed she could easily step into the
shoes of Katie Montgomery and take over the one spot and let Katie slide to the
two. Amy was able to dish the ball all over the court to various players
with fluidity and consistency thru the whole Lobo Howl. (She also displayed an
excellent shooting touch during the 3 pt. contest.) Timi E-Nunu even though
undersized down low she is a beast on the boards. She also was doing her
typical thing great defense and playing her heart out which she always
Some of the new comers are going to bring a lot of different things to this team that the Lobo fans haven't seen before. Let's first start with Eileen Weissmann from Chicago this girl can play down low and can easily jump out and hit the three. Which she did very easily and nicely couple times during tonight's scrimmage.
Christian Shelter from Mobile, AL is going to bring to this team something that has not been seen, an athletic ability that we have lacked in previous years.
Valerie Kast from Gallup High School here in New Mexico
is one big girl. Tonight she showed so much improved from last time I saw
her play in the state tournament, she has lost weight and has able to tone
up. A few times tonight Valerie displayed ability to hit the twelve to
fifteen jump shot. As Valerie matures in Don Flanagan's system she will
thrive and give us an added bonus that we have never had before. A huge inside
Now for a look at some of the girls coming back. Angela Hartill is not one bit afraid to go down low and get those rebounds and hard buckets, just like Kast she has toned very well during the off season. She is one player that stayed here all summer and worked in the weight room and boy is she showing it off now, she is one strong woman. Dionne Marsh, I'm calling it right now, All-American enough said! She is by far the best all around player that we have. Now she is able to step out and hit the outside shot. Like she has always down and get down low and jump high and get that ball in the basket or get to the line.
These Lobos are poised for a great run this season. The season is almost here and I can't wait for it now after seeing the Howl tonight! It makes me think that this will be one team that can do a lot of good things this season. Can you say Sweet 16?
Future Lobos were upon us tonight as Lobo fans were able to see in the stands Amanda Best from Washington as well as Kelsey Ansley from Texas. It was nice to seeing both young ladies in The Pit supporting the team they will soon be a part of.
Somebody forgot to charge our camera… Duh it was me so we only have a few pictures. We do however; have some nice video of tonight's scrimmage. I hope you enjoy and please go to
TheRedMenace.com message board and express your thoughts and views on tonight's Howl and anything having to do with Lobo Hoops!
