Eye On Recruiting: The Mind of Messina

Here is a chance to meet the latest player to commit to the University of New Mexico.

Osia Lewis started the New Mexico-Illinois pipeline 3 years ago, when he became the Defensive Coordinator for UNM. Now he has beat out a few hometown schools and received the 13th commitment for your Lobos. The Red Menace Presents… Carmen Messina.

Coach Paul Parpet, the Head Coach for Addison Trails HS, granted us a few minutes to talk about his prize pupil.

TRM: Coach, Can we get an accurate height and weight for Carmen?

Parpet: Sure, he is 6'2 1/2 225lbs.

TRM: So tell us about Carmen, the football player.

Parpet: He is a determined kid, very physical, and durable, possessing excellent lateral quickness. He never came off field, because he played RB and LB. He broke our schools career rushing (3095 yards) and TD's (34) records, in two years.

TRM: We saw that Carmen played FB at the East-West game in Orlando, is that the postion he'll be playing in college?

Parpet: Oh no, he was recruited and will play LB for UNM. His team was full at LB so he was asked to play FB instead. The University of Illinois and Iowa were recruiting Carmen as a FB but, he wanted to play LB on the next level.

TRM: So what schools recruited Carmen? Offered?

Parpet: All the state schools, (Ill, Northern Illinois, etc.), IA, and all the MAC schools.

TRM: There was a published report that you did not want Carmen taking any other visit after he committed to UNM?

Parpet: I believe your word is your bond. Kids today commit to one school and then visit other schools after. I think that is wrong. Osia did an outstanding job recruiting Carmen. He was personable and was straight-forward about what Carmen could expect at UNM. They also had a great at home visit (Carmen and Osia).

Carmen Messina, RB/LB, Addison Trails High School, All conference-1st Team, All Region-1st team, Honorable Mention All State.
