Eye On Recruiting: Lobo Elite Camp 2007

What a weekend for Lobo recruiting enthusiasts as Rocky Long will be hosting his football camp and Coach Alford will be hosting his Elite Camp. Here is a list of the players and some commentary by Scout.com recruiting expert Dave Telep on some of these players.

It is hard to believe that Coach Alford and Co. have been in charge at the University of New Mexico for only a few months. After taking over the job just a couple of months ago, they put together an unbelievable recruiting season, took their team out to the Bahamas, and now are hosting the 2007 Lobo Elite Camp this weekend.

We learned a few of the guys coming out to the camp and the first thing I did once I had the names was call the recruiting guru of the Scout.com network Dave Telep to get the rundown on a few of these young men visiting the 505 this upcoming weekend.

Dave Telep said that the majority of the players for the Elite Camp come two AAU teams the T-Mac All-Stars and the M-33 Ballers as the majority of the players from this camp

 Steve Tchiengang 6'8 Houston, TX

Here is an excerpt from an interview done with Tchiengang earlier this year.

"I feel like my work ethic stands out," Tchiengang told Scout.com last month. "I'm full of desire to be the best with hard work. That's what I've been doing. I never stop working. When I'm not playing, I'm working out. I'm always trying to improve. I just feel like I have a passion and desire to improve."

Tchiengang, who has offers from Louisville, Memphis, Florida, Texas A&M, and Indiana, among others, averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds as a junior. "I want to go somewhere that I can play right away," said Tchiengang. "But I know it's not given. I have to earn it and I'm willing to put the work in."

Dave Telep says: He is in the top 100… He is a 6-9 215lb face up power forward. He is very strong facing the basket and getting after it and competing. He is #55 Scout.com ranking.

 6-10 190 PF/WF Anthony Jones

In an interview with Anthony Jones done by GoPokes.com Jones believes he plays like Lamar Odom. Click here for the entire interview.

Dave Telep says: Anthony Jones is a versatile 6-10 small forward. Jones is a left hander that shoots the 3 and is really coming on as a prospect. #63

 Sampson Carter

From a Mempis Blog...

One name to keep an eye on during the summer recruiting season is Sampson Carter, who will be a senior at Hamilton this fall. Carter is the brother of former Tiger guard Shyrone Chatman, now the team's video coordinator.

Like Chatman, Carter grew up in Baton Rouge, La. But when Chatman got the job on Calipari's staff last summer, he convinced his brother to move to Memphis and live with him.

Since then, Carter has gone through a 4-inch growth spurt and now stands at roughly 6-7. Since Carter will still be 16 when school starts in the fall, prep school is an option. But even now, Carter is starting to get interest from mid-majors like New Mexico.

Dave Telep says: Sampson is a 6-7 really long athletic type. Plays both power and small forward

6-7 180 Laurence Bowers (St. George's HS Memphis TN)

Bowers has a nice touch and shoots the mid-range jumper. Not a physical defender but can block shots.

Dave Telep saysCut from the same mold as Sampson. I would consider him more of a prospect than player right now.

6-8 225 Will Brown (Duncanville HS, Duncanville TX)

Dave Telep says: Brown is a block player that nearly committed to UTEP during the high school season, but changed his mind to explore some of the new offers coming his way as Telep feels that Brown has the talent to play in any conference.

6-5 175 SG Phillip McDonald (Cypress Community Christian Houston TX)

Talented wing player who can bomb it from downtown. Has a good feel and won't force but takes advantages of good looks. Dave Telep says: A top 100 guy that is a straight shooter.

Chris Babb 6-foot-4 SG Arlington (Tex.) Oakridge School

Dave Telep says: A really really good mid-level player that can really shoot the ball. The two best shooters that will be on campus are Chris Babb and Phillip McDonald.

Enoch Andoh

Our own Wes Henderson interviewed Mr. Andoh when he visited last basketball season. Click here for that interview.

Telep says: Enoch is a block player from Az. Excellent student that has to work his way up to mid major level.

Nick Markovich 6'3 2 Pheonix, AZ

Last year was a baptism under fire for Markovich as he was quoted last summer as saying " "I need to improve my physical strength," he said. "I'm playing up. I want to develop a go up and dunk, don't worry about contact attitude." That has started to change for Makrovich as Telep says that Nick is one of the top players in the state of Arizona.

Austin Smith 6'8 4 Pheonix, AZ

Wes' spoke to Austin last season when he and Enoch Andoh visited The Pit.

A truly versatile big man… Yes that is right, Smith is also has a game down low at 6-8 he has the ability to block shots and post up for a shot as well, but according to Smith he says, "I feel that I have to work on my post play to be the all around D-I player. That is my goal right now."

Eric Williams

This 2009 power forward is really starting to make a name for himself as he is described as a rebounding machine that can block shots. Dave Telp says: Williams is a 2009 SF explosive athlete that is starting to creep into the high major category.

Coltin Iverson

Dave Telp says: A 6-10 center from M33M team that is a very good mid-major prospect.

Jamaal Fenton

Dave Telep says: Talented guard that is very charismatic.

Christian Watford

Excellent student and big time shooter. Sturdy body and he's comfortable from different spots on the floor. Should be one of the top tier guys at his position nationally.

Dave Telep says: Can really really shoot and has a chance to be a top 25 player in his class.

These are the guys I spoke with Dave Telep with, but here is a list of guys that are expected to show up.
