With the Lobo football team playing on Thursday night the coaching staff had the opportunity to hit the recruiting trail and check out high school players all across the country. One of the places the staff will be looking at is El Paso Texas where they will be taking a look at Montwood High School's Jason Donaldson.
And what a show the Lobo assistant was able to view as Friday night vs. Coronado Donaldson line was 5 receptions 130 yards and 3 touchdowns, bringing Donaldson's total to 795 yards and 8 scores.
We recently spoke with Montwood Football Coach Chuck Veliz about Jason's game.
"Jason is a 6-1 170lb wide receiver/defensive back," says Coach Veliz. "He runs a 4.55, but has hit the 4.5 mark on good days."
"Jason is a great athlete," said Veliz. "Not only is he a very good wide receiver, but he is also one of the top 5 basketball players in the area. That basketball background has helped him, as he has no problem going up and getting a ball. He knows how to use his body to shield defenders away, and has the ability to take the ball away from other players."
I asked Coach Veliz what he felt was Jason's biggest asset as a player. "He understands routes and know exactly where he needs to go and how to run plays," responded Veliz. "We go 4 and 5 receiver sets and throw the ball around quite a bit here. I've had Jason for 3 years and he understands exactly where he needs to be."
Coach I notice that Jason plays wide receiver and defensive back at Montwood. What position do you think he fits best at the D-I level? "In my opinion he is a natural wide receiver," said Veliz.
According to Coach Veliz the schools really going after Donaldson are hometown UTEP, as well as Texas Tech, New Mexico State, and UNM. "I've spoken with Coach Reffett about Jason," said Veliz. "We go to New Mexico's football camp every year, and they are aware of Jason's ability, and are on him very hard."
