Merritt Chooses New Mexico

Lobos are always on the lookout for quick hard hitting linebackers and with UNM graduating all 4 of their starters this year Spencer fits the bill.

The University of New Mexico has been focused on the continued recruitment of the Chicago area. Coach Osia Lewis made inroads in the area as an Illinois assistant and they have only widened at the University of New Mexico. He has found another LB to fit into the UNM defensive scheme in 6-2 187 Spencer Merritt Waubonsie Valley HS Aurora IL.

Last weekend we learned that Spencer had visitied UNM and had given the Lobo coaching staff a verbal commitment. We had a chance to speak with Spencer this week.

TRM: How was your visit this past weekend?

SM: It was a good trip; actually it went better than I thought. The airport, skiing, and other things are right by the school, and the facilities were good. Zach Arnett was my host. We hung out and he went to eat with us. He's a good guy. Coach Long has the program in the right direction and Coach Lewis is a great coach.

TRM: Did you commit?

SM: Yes I verbally committed.

TRM: Did you receive an in-home visit from any of the coaches?

SM: Coach Lewis came in tonight and answered some questions my dad and I had. He let me know that I could come in on July 5 for voluntary workouts and get an early jump on classes. I think I want to do that.

TRM: Which other schools were you considering? Offers?

SM: Wyoming offered me last summer. I visited but it was not a good fit for me. Army, and Air Force offered, also I was talking to Navy some.

TRM: What would you consider your strength at LB?

SM: My vision, pursuit, flying to the ball and my lateral movement. I really hustle to the ball because when you do take good things happen.

Obviously a huge reason why the Lobo Coaching Staff was looking at this up and coming star.
