Friday Night -- No Lights Just Football

A day late, but not a dollar short, as we get a audio podcast with Rudy C. and a short write up with Michael Vickers.

Two a day coverage with Mike Vickers and Rudy C.

Vickers covered the evening practice with words while Rudy C. scored some great interviews with Coach Baldwin, DeAndre Wright, and Matt Streid. Enjoy it all!

The New Mexico Lobos held a brief practice without pads on a breezy Friday night at the UNM practice fields and prepared for Saturday afternoon's Fan Photo Day live scrimmage.  The offense, defense, and special teams carried out walkthroughs in preparation for the scrimmage and as you will hear in RudyC's interview with Coach Dave Baldwin the offense completed installation of their entire package for this season.  LT Sylvester Hatten and C Ben Contreras are currently being held out of practice, both with mild concussions.  This has allowed Coach Baldwin and OL Coach Jason Lenzmeier to shuffle the deck and move certain players to new positions in an effort to find the best 8 offensive linemen on the team (5 starters and 3 backups that can play several positions).  As of now Sr. Matt Streid has been working back at tackle at times and So. Mike Cannon has moved to center.  Contreras should be held out of practice for one week and hopefully can resume his progress toward starting at center quickly, allowing Jr. Erik Cook to be moved to guard.

Following the walkthroughs the Lobos broke into a brief 7 on 7 scrimmage and were instructed to avoid contact and to make plays on the ball only.  On the very first play the UNM defense continued its impressive play as Sr. CB Glover Quin intercepted Donovan Porterie's pass attempt.  True freshman CB Anthony Hooks added a pass breakup of his own while covering WR Daryl Jones later in the scrimmage.  The offense was able to counter punch with great catches by Sr. WR Jermain McQueen and So. Bryant Williams who nicely split So. CB Jerome Jenkins and Fr. S Bubba Williams to make the reception.

After the brief 7 on 7 period the Lobos moved into Rocky Long Stadium for final walkthroughs.  The defense in particular was able to get a feel for the gameday play calling system as Coach Long was signaling in the defensive coverages from the sideline just as he will be when TCU comes to town on Aug. 30.

Be sure to listen to RudyC's interview with Coach Baldwin below as he brings us up to speed on the progress of the offense and answers many of the key questions that Lobo fans have heading into the season opener.

Next up:  Fan Photo Day Scrimmage Saturday 4-6 pm.  Gates open at 3 pm, free admission.
