AlbuKIRKe has always been known as The Duke! On Monday there was a coup of sorts as 'The Duke' was replaced by The King of AlbuKIRKe!

What a great time for  6'11 C Alex Kirk of Los Alamos, New Mexico as he verbally committed  to the University of New Mexico after a visit from UNM Asst. Coach Craig Neal. The announcement came late last night during Monday night football and tonight I had a chance to talk to Kirk about him committing to New Mexico.

"I was going through the process and it was starting to take a toll, but right now I feel good about what I did and excited about it," said a happy Kirk. Alex isn't the only one happy as thousands of Lobo fans caught a Hilltopper high Monday night and Tuesday morning. Click here as The Red Menace "hails the King of AlbuqKIRKe!

The King of AlbuKIRKe!

As soon as UNM started recruiting Alex it was evident to fans and Alex himself that Kirk he was the number target for UNM. An instate kid, a big man, and high profile athlete. While New Mexico was all over Alex, there were plenty of many suitors looking for his services, but when in came down to it UNM was the one he wanted to call home for the next four years.

"I like them (Alford and ‘Noodles') a lot, throughout the time they were looking at me, I understood what they were saying the whole time," says Kirk. "They told me I would get playing time, develop me as a player, and maybe give me the opportunity to go to the next level."

While the Lobos were the first to offer Alex Kirk, the big man had an unbelievable summer participating in both the LeBron James and Amare Stoudemire basketball camps, as well as playing for the Granger Hurricane and Houston Hoops AAU programs. Kirk quickly blossomed and seemingly the entire basketball community was centered around the big man from Los Alamos.

Good night says Alex!

In the end UNM had a recruiting battle with high profile programs that had also offered Kirk including: Arizona, Maryland, California, Minnesota, Oregon St., and many more. However, when push came to shove it came down to UNM and Arizona. Alex Kirk made the decision to play down the road.

"Coach Miller (Arizona head coach) have a good situation over there and great players, but I had to stick with UNM," Kirk said Tuesday night.

Kirk has been to plenty of Lobos games over the years and now he will be able to live the dream of most New Mexican basketball players… To run down that ramp while wearing the donning the Cherry and Silver!

"It's incredible, I know I have a long way to go but this is my dream to play Division I basketball. It is one goal accomplished with tons ahead," exclaimed Alex!
