Eye on Recruiting: Matt Ramondo

Coach Mike Locksley is always looking for the top talent in the state of New Mexico. Saturday one of those young men showed up for junior day.

This past weekend the University of New Mexico held their Cherry Silver Spring game. The same weekend they held a junior day as perspective recruits came out to tour the facilities and see the current Lobo team on the field.

One of those young men that came out to New Mexico's Junior Day was 6-4 260lb Matt Rammondo of Mayfield HS (Las Cruces, NM). "The Lobos treat me real good," said Rammondo. "The show me this could be my second home."

Those are the kind of words that make Lobo fans very happy as the state of New Mexico produces very few D-I athletes and when there are D-I players in the state, Lobo fans love it when these players stay in Albuquerque. Say Matt about UNM. "They have the coaching staff and facilities to make this a great program. It's just a matter of where the players want to take it."

PrepNewMexico.com had this to say about Matt.

Matthew Rammondo 6-4, 260 DT/OT (Mayfield HS) - Offers great size and athleticism to any team. Has the frame to be 290 in a few years and is very athletic. If Matt can improve technique wise, he could be a PAC 10 offer guy. He projects well at DT, DE or OT. Is a definite high level D-I talent.

Rammondo humbly said, ". I don't like to toot my own horn, as I'm not that type of person." He did add however, "I like to challenge myself to go hard every play. I need to work on increasing my power and speed. I have to keep getting better because the athletes around me keep getting better."

Matt was wearing a bright red New Mexico Lobo T-shirt to the game, but he let me know that he is not ready at this time to make a decision as to his college choice as he would like to explore all his options. He did tell me that he currently has two offers from instate New Mexico and New Mexico State, and he is hearing from every Pac-10 school but USC and in the Big XII Texas Tech is making inquiries.

Many of the fans still noticed the shirt… And with a grin they hope that UNM plucks another D-I athlete from the city of Las Cruces.
