Eye on Recruiting: 2010 Summer Camp

There isn't any archery, smores, or campfire songs, but today's campers seemed very excited. Go inside and check out some of the young men that came out to "get noticed."

Today the University of New Mexico football team held one their Air it Out 7 on 7 Camp, In The Trenches OL/DL Camp, and the Lobo Spread QB Camps this weekend.

While I didn't stay for the QB camp I did spend the entire afternoon watching some 7 on 7 action with schools from Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico in attendance.

The wind was blowing but it didn't stop Raton (NM) Quarterback Dustin Walton from looking every bit the pocket gunslinger that he is! Dude can flat out toss the rock, and in talking to his coaches he plays just as solid with D-linemen in his face. We know he has an offer from Colorado State and he still has other schools looking at him.

Another young man that caught my eye today was Eldorado's (Albuquerque NM) Tyler McCulloch. A tall lanky receiver that looks to be able to put on some weight and be a solid D-I receiver. Eldorado's Willie Pounds was also in attendance though he did not participate in today's camp as he is preparing for a trip to Colorado for a full pad camp up North. Pounds informed me today that he will be back later this week for Coach Locksley's Technique school.

After watching 7 on 7 I hobbled (yeah the Achilles tendon is very sore this evening.) behind the IPF to watch the In The Trenches camp hosted by Coaches Degory, Blackshear, and Rubin Carter. There was an interesting twist to today's camp as many players were wearing helmets and pads, which gave them the opportunity to do some hitting today.

Immediately I caught sight of Las Cruces Mayfield's DL Matt Ramondo working out sans pads but still displaying the nasty streak that many opponents are growing to fear. I spoke with PrepNewMexico.com ‘s Joe Baca tonight and he said, "Every time you watch Ramondo he is just so aggressive and mean."

I spoke with Ramondo after camp and he said, "I came to be coached by Rubin Carter. That guy is a legend. Who wouldn't want to be coached by him?"

The City of Visions' (Rio Rancho NM) Jr Josh Baggett who is representing the COV with pride! Look for this young man to just get better and better!

Volcano Vista's (Albuquerque New Mexico) Anthony Kennedy showed up a little late, quickly stretched out, and improved his stock greatly. It helps that Kennedy recently received an offer from New Mexico State… Could the Lobos be the next school to offer Kennedy? We will find out soon enough.

How about Hatch Valley's Chantz Carson? The big man from down South really responded to the coaching of Mike Degory and in keeping my ear to the ground I found out was really noticed today.

"You better get off that foot," said Coach Mike Locksley… So I took Locks advice. He is a coach after all and relaxed in the stadium as the 7 on 7 championship game came down to Eldorado and Rio Rancho going head to head with Eldorado coming out on top!

I've covered Lobo camp for 9 consecutive years for TheRedMenace.com and I would have to say that this years 7 on 7 and OL/DL was one of the sharpest I've attended, the players worked hard and I like the fact that there are so many players in the 505/575 that are really starting to get known both in and out of the state. I also like the way that Rubin Carter has become the "go to guy" when talking to defensive linemen across the country, and finally the buzz all around camp…

Could UNM be a BCS school by 2012? Many of the current high school players, their parents, and coaches were talking about UNM and the MWC become a BCS school in the next couple of years… So I figured why not ask Locks if his recruiting style changed if the BCS came a calling. I wasn't surprised but Locks told me that he already has a plan both recruiting wise and for the entire program if the MWC were to become a BCS program…

Stay tuned to TheRedMenace.com as I stayed late after the camp to interview most of the players in this story, and will be making even more phone calls as Coach Locksley will be hosting his "Technique School" the next couple of weeks.
